Just got a No1!!

Pretty stoked as today i went into the bigger town to purchase some Ammo, while waitin i was browsin the 2nd hand rack an down off the shelf was a Ruger No1 303br, after just missing out on one online i just had to have a hold an point the rifle..
i left without the Rifle but it was on my mind with only a few hundred in Aus i wanted it!!

i went back n hour later an Purchased the gun in excellent cond eith a minor wood finish issue in a corner of the stock deal... no biggy whatsoever.

Can you guys gimme a run down on your Exp . specially eith open sights an federal ammo !

I have no experience with a #1 in .303, but the American factory loadings are on the timid side for a cartridge that has a capacity similar to a .308 and is chambered in an exceptionally strong action like your #1 or a P-13/14. Therefore, I recommend handloading ASAP, but when you do, pay attention to the shoulder length. The #1 doesn't have camming action on closing like a bolt gun, so a tight fitting shoulder might result in difficulty when raising the lever. Bump your shoulders enough to ensure easy chambering; I don't know if Redding makes a body die for the .303 Brit, but it would sure be handy for this application if they do.

By the way, you're lucky you didn't miss it. So don't bother buying any more lottery tickets for the remainder of this year; your allotment is used up.
 
I shot my No.1 in 303 with open sights for a while and it made a great brush gun. Even took a nice deer with it with Federal blue box ammo...not my first choice in ammo but it shoots well in this rifle (150gr I think). I've since put an NECG peep on it and find it a bit faster aiming than the factory sights. Didn't need to change the front post either. Also, as Boomer suggests, started handloading for it. My pet load now is 50gr H4350 and a 174gr Hornady RN but would like to try out Varget next year.
 
i was getting 3" groups with the open sights. which is pretty much par for the course for me with rifles with similar sight radius'.

Yeah 3 inch is ok for what i plan to shoot with it, an at the distances,.. Have read abit about over diameter bores gettin shipped into Aus but il ask on the aus forum regardin that.
i agree it is such a lovely rifle, feels so good to point an the factory sights seem to line up pretty good for me!

Ahhh! I feel the commonwealth love in this thread. I'm sure i can speak for everyone here in saying we want pics of said rifle and we also want pics of you killing a sambar or a camel or some other crazy australian sh*t with it mate. Do some damage with that f*cker and report back ASAP please. It's summer there isn't it?
 
It is just Summer, end of spring.... Warming up!

Yeah will have to wait for some paper work an i suspect in about 2 weeks il have photos an such of a little report on how it shoots!
 
Is that what you would suggest to reload in it 1899?
Ammo is $30-32 per box of Federal blue 180s an I think it was Highland 180s.. For that price il buy a box of both an see which this particular rifle likes, an if it doesnt satisfy my needs il reload.

i guess i want to shoot under 150m, most of the time 100, keeping the factory open sights.
What do hunters do for back up shells, Carry some in a slip on stock shell holder, or put 2 in there fingers ;)

i wont need to blaze away but sometimes the 2nd shot is on offer to anchor
 
I have a ruger #1 in .303 British, and it shoots Federal 150 Grain bullets into a bit less than 1 1/2 at 100 yards. Mine has taken whitetails and moose. The Federal 150 grain load is a good one.
 
REad several No1s liked the 150gr projectile range an shot accurately enough for huntin!!

Any photos AlbertaAl? would be nice to see, is your rifle scoped? what distance you take the game at?

I have to agree as well, one is never enough, just great handling rifles.

Love mine and I think the next one will be a 303 been thinking about it for a while now, time to start looking for one.

My Ruger #1 in .303 British is scoped with a Vortex 2-7x32 scope. It is a pretty good scope, except I've experienced some sun flaring a couple of times. I am planning on re-scoping it with a Leupold variable or a straight 4x or 6x Leupold.

My farthest shot was on a 6x5 whitetail buck at a bit over 300 yards. My moose with it was shot at about 150 yards. Last year's whitetail was shot at about 250 yards. All with one shot with the Federal 150 grain cartridge.

I hope you like yours as much as I like mine. I have a few pictures. I'll dig them up.

Thats what I am looking to hear from, people who have actually shot a variety of game.

Post all the pictures you have in here, How are your groups at the 100y range? photos of that too?

Any modifications you have done, eg floated barrel, trigger, nothing?

some good ranges that you have taken game at, the scope obviously extends the distance in which to place a shot in the zone. lately ive heard people say the 303 is used like a 308.... thats got my ears pricked up.
