Just got my first AR...Problem with the safety...Need help

Hi everyone, newbie here. Just got my first AR15 DA556.

The rifle comes with the safety on 'semi' position and it can't be switched to 'safe' position.

Is it a manufactural issue or it's designed like this? Do I need to push it harder or just send it back to the vender?

I've searched the forum but no result. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Any help would be appreciated.;)

A lot of firearms won't let you put the safety on until you cycle the action and it's ready to fire. Without loading the rifle pull back the bolt and release it. Safety should now lock.
 
As previous posters alluded to, AR safeties don't engage when the hammer is down (pointing straight up).

1. Push out the rear takedown pin and swing the upper assembly up.
2. If the hammer is straight up, pull it back with your thumb to #### it.
3. Engage the safety. It should work.
4. Rest your thumb on the hammer to catch it (you don't want it to drop without support as this can cause damage).
5. With the safety engaged and the upper still tipped up, pull the trigger. The hammer should not drop.
6. Disengage the safety, support the hammer, and pull the trigger - ease the hammer forward.

Should work.
 
Thanks guys I really appreciate your replies. I've tried #### the gun and then turn the safety, doesn't work. I also took the procedures at #6, I got stuck at step 3, the safety still doesn't move.
 
Did you rack the charging handle all the way back? Actually 1/2 way should also reset the hammer. You didn't pull the trigger after working the charging handle did ya?
 
I racked the charging handle all the way back, and didn't pull the trigger before I turn the safety...Maybe it is just broken...
 
Called a AR15. Safety cannot be applied unless the hammer is back AKA cocked. FYI forcing something without understanding how it works is a good way of breaking something. Alot of guns you cannot apply the safety till the gun is cocked.

Also to get a better view whats going on. Pop the 2 pins and pull off the upper to expose the lower.

If not flip the gun upside down, take a flat head screw driver and loosen the grip screw located inside the grip and see if the selector will move once the hammer is cocked back.
 
Take the pistol grip off. You will see a spring appear in the gap between the grip and lower receiver on the right side, make sure it doesn't fly off when you take the grip off. There is supposed to be a detent sitting on the spring, it travels in a channel on the safety itself. Take the spring, detent and safety out (safety can be taken out from the left side when detent is removed) and check for anything weird like burrs or else.

If you find something weird, tell us and/or post pics.
 
The detention spring hole in the grip can be to shallow forcing undo spring tension on the detent inhibiting it from retracting from the dimple. Or the spring itself is of poor quality or to long. Also check to see if the orientation of the detent is correct and not installed incorrectly with the flat portion inserted first.

Disassemble the safety and grease the detent dimples and activate it repeatedly to wear it in. The detent has a pronounced point that will eventually decrease in size with prolonged use.

You can change the spring, file the point off of the detent or make the detent spring hole deeper to release tension. The last choice was a remedy I used on a MFT grip on my new build.
