My first Mosin (M44) just arrived today and after some degreasing I plan on taking her out on Saturday to try her out. I've got some 180 gr sellier & bellot fmj ready to go, however....

I've read in several places on the net that ammo up to 200 gr in the Mosin is fine, others have stated that you shouldn't use anything over 147 gr the rifle was designed for. What is the general opinion of this? Other than the higher recoil is there any reason not to use the 180 gr ammo?

cheers,

180gr ammo is fine. Mosins have been issued with both light and heavy ball over the years. I tend to stick to either 147gr or 174gr issue bullet weights as they line up with the various sights better.

Thanks, I'll give the 180gr a try; I'll most likely end up buying a case of bulk 147gr.
