Just got my grandfathers 30/30

Not sure if this is the right spot to post this but I am excited.

I just came back from my trip to Newfoundland first time almost 13 yrs and I brought back my grandfathers 1894 30/30 with an octagon barrel. This rifle was handed down from father to son since my great grand father bought it in 1894. So it was given to my dad to give to me in 1984 but being to young to take it home it has stayed in Newfoundland since then.

Someone told me that this rifle will be worth a small fortune but I don't think it will be since its not all original parts. But sentimentally its worth millions in my eyes haha. The butt stock that is on it was made by hand by my grandfather after he fell through the ice in Newfoundland tracking a moose and broke it in half and the iron sights on it are not original either. The iron sight had also broken off so my grandfather actually took the lip off a measuring tape and tac welded it in place until he got it in the perfect spot. This was all done when he was around 20 yrs old. He was born in 1904!

I am working on getting a photo of it and will post it on here in the next couple of days.
 
Neat stuff! I'd like to get a hold of my grandfather's old H&R 16 Gauge Single Shot break barrel... I know it isn't worth much financially, but it holds a lot of emotional value.

I am the only one in the family who wants it and is licensed. My uncle has let it rust so much that it has seized shut, he broke the trigger (in half), and has let pain drops fall on the stock when painting. It's in rough condition but I don't think it would be that difficult to restore... there is no pitting on the outside, and the bore looks alright...

I just wish he'd let me have it...

The hand carved stock and especially the very creative measuring tape sight, created by you Granfather will, I think, make this the most precious firearm you could possibly own! Congrats on your good fortune!!

Those old timers! LOL! :)
I remember when my dad lost the sight on his Springfield M1903 and used the hole on a bent back hacksaw blade as a peep sight. He hacksawed the barrel down to 18 inches too. But with that setup I seen him shoot a coyote at 300 yards with a neighbor farmers chicken still in it's mouth.

A penny filed down to replace the front sight also use to be the norm for those old timers. Family history like that rifle doesn't just grow on trees. Take care of it make sure its past on to a good relation when the time comes. Not the one who will trade it for some magic beans or crack...
 
Congrats. Sentimental value trumps all. It's really nice to see the gun has stayed in the family all those long years.

That's a great story and looking forward to seeing some pics of the old gal!

Not original parts is an understatement ;) It sounds like your grandfather was the type we need more of these days - heavier on the common sense and ingenuity than the whining and hand-waiving!

As others have said you have a treasure there. I would love to have guns handed down from my family but alas, being a first generation Canadian (and my family from the "wrong" side of WWII in Europe) that isn't in the cards for me.
 
inherited guns

I have a single shot 22 that my uncle gave to me when I was 14--I'm 68 now. It was a used gun when he got it.
My son always admired a model 50 Winchester shot gun that I bought in 1957 so I gave it to him a year or so ago. He tells me that it has a long time home now.
A few years ago I bought a Model 88 winchester rifle and a 20 guage shotgun.Both of these will be passed on to my second oldest grandson when he is old enough to have them.
Also I am a bit of a painting artist and my main hope for my paintings is that one or more of them survive and sometime after I am dead and gone that one of my descendants will have them on their wall and will let folks know that his/her grandpa or great****grandpa was the artist. In my home we have paintings by my wife's grandpa.They go back to 1914.They are very precious and important to us.
Your rifle sounds like a real keeper .It will remind you of all your ancestors who owned it.Such a reminder keeps them alive in your mind--Gone but not forgotten..Great story,Good stuff.
 
I inherited my Great grandfather's Win 94 38-55 made in 1907, my Grandfather's 303 Savage , an Iver Johnson's 12 ga single and a Baystate 16 ga single , I gave the two shotguns to my youngest brother just to be nice ( I know he'll keep them and is the most active gunnut in the family second to me) but the rifles will stay and will be passed on to whoever I feel will cherish them the most (in the family).
 
Sorry guys for not posting any pictures yet, when I got back from Newfoundland the internet was down so I couldn't upload any pictures but I promise they will be up this Friday evening.

I took it out shooting this weekend and what a beautiful rifle. I shot a target 100 yrds out standing, no bull. I have some problems with loading the rifle up with the rounds so I will be taking it in to the gunsmith today.

Thats a good story, nothing I like hearing more than the inheritance of good old guns that still shoot well. I wish I had someone in the family to hand down something.....

Ah well, I have to instead console myself by buying old Winchesters to make up for that.
