Just got my new rifle

I've got a .22 in a Savage 64 too! But just not the stainless one.
For a scope I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a Tasco 3-9x32, Sure does look ###y now! and shoots great too!
You'll have to let us know how the 30-06 shoots, I'm lookin to invest in the same set up as yours early this summer or as soon as da moneys start rolling again.

I would start reloading but I guess I have to shoot a few rounds first before I start to do that/ Maybe after a few times of shooting it, I will start reloading.

There is a walmart pretty close to me but I have been there a few times and I never saw anything for firearms. :(

I am happy with both the .22 and the 30-06. I really like the rimfire but was hoping for a 10/22 but lebarons didn't have any. Maybe next time I will pick one up. The only reason why I wanted a 10/22 is because of the 25 clip mags. The only thing that sucks about the savage rimfire is it doesn't use normal rings or mounts. It has these weird groves in the rifle that I have only ever seen on a pellat gun so I have to buy a special scope. What about a holosight from bushnell or a reddot. Would that be decent enough for a rimfire or do I need the 3-9x40 for the rimfire also? I will probably only be hunting for partridge anyways?!?!

Thanks all

cereal83,

Congraulations on your first big game rifle! Mine was an old Savage 110 in 270 Winchester that I bought used in 1964. I know how you feel. :D

When you do start reloading, be sure to try some 180 gr Nosler partitions ahead of 56gr of IMR 4350. That is a very accurate big game load in every 30-06 I have ever shot it in, and will really deliver the goods for you when you need it.

..........and, best of luck shooting it. We all need a little now and then. :)

The 'weird little grooves' are fairly standard for rimfire rifles. And a lot of rimfire scopes come with rings for this system. ;) I would recommend a Bushnell 4 power rimfire scope or such for ~ $80. I bought one for my wife's 10-22, it included rings and it works fine. You don't need an expensive scope for a .22 as there's no recoil. :) You can go higher magnification if you want too, and certainly better in qualitly but if budget is a concern you don't need to.

I put a Tasco 2.5x to 10x with adjustable objective on my .22 savage bolt action. Cost about $100.00 and has mil dots to boot.
Set it for 15 yards or 100, there is no parallax to worry about.

Do I just need rings to mount a scope or do I have to get something else to mount the rings on? I have be looking for some info but I can't find any.

Also, if I just need rings, which size do I need because I have normal rings that came with the Savage 30-06 but they are too big to fit into the grooves.

The grooves on the 22 accept rings directly. You can buy 22 rings (Millet, Weaver, etc) and use a 1 in tube centefire scope if you want (eg you've got one laying around) You have to be careful about interference with the scope bell/barrel/bolt. Alternatively, you can buy a 60$ rim-fire scope that comes complete with rings - which is probably the way to go, as the parallax is 50Y compared to 100y+ for a centrefire scope.
Your existing centrefire rings wont work on the 22 because they are a larger dovetail size - in the order of 5/8 inch vs 3/8 for 22 rings. Depending on the make of centrefire rifle, you may also need bases to attach to the receiver. The rings attach to the bases, and must be compatible - eg Weaver style, Leupold, etc (Some centrefire rifles have the bases integral with the receiver - eg Tikka. In these cases you often have to buy rings made specifically for the rifle )
Many people mount their own scopes - not hard to do. Too bad you dont have access to a range - there's lots of expertise available to help you mount, sight in, and shoot your rifle. Perhaps someone here on CGN can assist in this regard...

Thanks for all that info. This is what I was looking for. I will look around and see what pops up.

Are the Bushnell rimfire scopes decent enough or do I want to get smething better?

What about these red dot scopes or the holosite from bushnell. How are these for .22's?
