So I have pretty much decided upon the STI spartan .45. I've done some reading and it sounds like a decent quality gun.

However I have seen this cheap norinco's kicking around. Any comments on them?

Also, I was thinking of getting a GSG 1911 in .22, something really cheap to shoot and they only run around $425.00

This way when I don't want to break the wallet on .45 ammo and can crank out the .22 for a bit. Any comments on the GSG as well?

well i too was just hunting for a couple of different caliber pistols and settled on the 1911 platform
i opted out of the 45 it just costs too much for the ammo
so i bought a Shooters Arms Manufacturing 1911A1 in 9mm $509
and a GSG 1911.22lr $399
i have shot both now and like each one very much
but i still have to get out and really shoot them and get a better feel for both
though at this point i don't think that i could have made a better choice for the price points

on the GSG it is not as heavy as the SAM but not by a lot it's lighter because it's made from an alloy not steel it shoots well and so far i have had no issues with it

Norincos are a good entry level gun, they shoot surprisingly well and accept all the 1911 aftermarket parts. CanAm (sponsor at the top of this page) has a special on right now. A Norinco 45 plus 1000rds of ammo for like $599, and I believe shipping is free. You can't beat that deal with a stick. If I didn't already have one for a project gun I would be all over it (I may yet) but I've got a couple of 1911's already and it won't replace my SIG 1911. Also a cheap gun is sometimes best if you decide you don't like the 1911 platform.

GSG 1911 can't be beat, a real fun gun.
Good deal for a very good gun at CanadaAmmo, with the Norinco 1911, plus ammo.
SFRC has the Norinco 1911 in 9mm for $410 taxed and shipped. Very good gun.
Norinco has come a long way, only drawback is that it comes from China.
If you can get past that, it's a great gun at an even better price.

I love my 1911s. Even the Norcs. Like dogzilla, if I didn't already have a few I'd be all over that deal CanAm has going!

I haven't handled an STI personally, but they always get good reviews here.

Norcs can be nice guns. Or they can be less than nice. Oh sure, they all go BANG! and seem to do so with reliability. But for the extra you'll pay for the Spartan you'll be getting an adjustable rear sight and a much higher baseline minimum in terms of slide to frame fit, barrel fit and trigger feel. If this is your first 1911 it will definetly make you smile after you shoot the Spartan.

That CanAmmo deal is sweet,
so is the SFRC 941 deal,
GSG is a fun gun, cheap to shoot.

Keep in mind 45ACP is very expensive to shoot, hard to shoot so lots of practice = lots of money.

Nothing wrong with the Norinco's. I have one (bought it used and it was tuned) that's given me great service.

There is a company in Prince George (he used to be a site sponsor but isn't so I can't post his name - PM me for it) that sells tuned Norinco 1911A1's for about $450 IIRC.

Gunnar is his name Armco Machine and Plating is his company.

No problems passing along info about guns and gunsmiths here just can't hotlink to companys that aren't sponsors.
Gunnar was a sponsor but got dropped due to bad business practice.

I'd just buy a Norinco without getting the Gunnar magic as it might just run nice and smooth right out of the box like most of them.....to avoid lemon related headaches buy from Marstar. That way if you get a lemon it will be a no hassle exchange or money back situation.

The S.A.M's are looking pretty good too......a stainless 9mm enhanced commander would be a good first buy.

You can mention the "Armco" name, just no "hot linking".

That's my understanding, anyways.

How about buying reloaded ammo for the .45? Combat masters has some in Alberta for not a bad price. 1000 rounds for 380 I think I seen?

I'm pretty much sold on the GSG so just looking for something a bit bigger to shoot on the side as well. Recommend anything else that wouldn't be so expensive to shoot then? Cam you a .40 in 1911 and are they less to shoot?

Could go 9mm as well I guess, I just wanted something with a bit more oomph.

Welcome to the 1911 world....

Personally, if you don't reload, if you have your heart set on a Spartan 1911, then I'd get the 9mm. Or if you plan on getting into reloading yourself then get the .45ACP.

The GSG 1911 .22lr is a good choice as well.

My .02

I like the Spartans but I would go for the 9mm version unless you reload. Lots of good things said about the norinco np29's so I might look there for a tighter budget. My first pistol Was a para-ordnance p16-40, very nice to shoot but I still had to reload to afford shooting. Local guns store charged premium for .40 because it was a 'rare' caliber.
