Just grabbed an SKS

I've posted this before, so here it is again. P.P made this for me, and it works great for not spilling hot water on yourself.
Just had to use 303 British brass and reshaped the top part to 7,62x39 with my sizing die.
The larger base brass offers the right diameter for 3/8" tubing. Just be careful when drilling if you have bits with regular cutting angle for ferrous metal, it can plunge too fast and seize in brass.
PP. :)

The gas tube is attached to a piece of wood. Is that whole piece fine to submerge in water?

We did similar to you but ended up lightly oiling most pieces except the firing pin, figured it'd help protect the metals.

Oh, sorry, poor wording on my part. Simply run a solvent soaked patch through the tube and run a dry patch through, then pour hot water down and dry. When I said small bits I meant things like the Bolt, springs, ect.

So I'm going to take it out again tomorrow. Just to double check, I can simply pull the gun apart just enough to run boiling water down the barrel, gas port, gas tube, dry it, and that's essentially it? This can wait until back up home, I'm assuming?

I just do the boiling water thing, then clean like normal.

Yes you can wait until you get home to do it.

But DON'T let it sit overnight! It's amazing how fast the piston and gas tube gather rust after shooting corrosive ammo. I recently cleaned a friend of mine's SKS after he fired corrosive ammo and let it sit for 5 years without cleaning:eek:. The gas piston and tube broke free eventually (but should be replaced), and the bolt looks very similar to the one on my battle weary Arisaka Type 38. (more pits and craters than on the face of a 14 year old teenager!)
Even if you use Windex (and patch dry) after shooting corrosive ammo, it will help to reduce the problems associated with corrosion.

Damm you people!
You just mad me buy another one!!
:D
And wait tell you see how I trick this baby out into a tack driver!!!
:sniper:

hahaha they're a blast. Last night was only the second time I've ever even shot rifles and I was able to pick off beer bottles, cans and even split an arrow standing vertically from around 60 yards or so with iron sights/being stock. I'm sure that's not too impressive to you guys but it was fun. Now I want an 858

That sounds impressive to me! I haven't fired my SKS yet. I have a crate of ammo waiting to be used up!

BTW, what did you discover about the stripper clips that was so good? Wait, you where hand loading ammo one by one? Please say no. LOL!

What I found funny was that with both of my SKS's (one from Frontier and the other from Lever), they graciously included 2 empty stripper clips with each rifle. After going about 700-800 rounds of Czech surplus ammo, I have more strippers than the #5 Orange nightclub!!! :bump:
I would have rather they given me a front sight tool as opposed to the oiler and ammo pouch, as I already have quite a few of those, but the few clips they give you just crack me up!

lol me too. not to mention the oiler bottle was completely emptied, right into the plastic bag it sat in.
