Just how far can one take a 22lr?

So on a friendly bet yesterday, a buddy said you couldn't hit anything past 200 yds.. so I went for a bbq tank (empty, full of holes) sitting @ 300 :)

Managed to peg it 6 times in about 50-60 rounds (a bit breesy) but was impressed that the groupings were actually not too bad (sighting in, in snow next to the tank, it was around a foot) so now it has got me wondering..... just how far could one lob a round in?

Rifle was a stock rem 597 TVP with cheapo 3-9 scope (about to change!!!) And rem yellow jacket ammo

I have made consistent hits out to 400. My best was about 8/10 on a 12x12 plate. Fairly calm day (under 10mph). I am averaging somewhere around 6/10 at that range, that is not match ammo, so its usually the wind I am misreading, but occasionally I think its the ammo. Had to say.....certainly couldn't be my mistake, hahah. To be fair, my MKII Savage in the Tactical wood stock bedded can average around 1 moa at 100 on a calm day when I am doing my job, that's with federal 525 and Winchester 333. It is an excellent rifle for the dollar. It performs very well with MIDAS and FGMM, but that pricey plinking in the 22LR world and I keep it for showing off and special occasions.

22LR or any rimfire for that matter is perfect practice for LR centerfire shooting, if you are making repeatable hits at 300-400 yards in most conditions with a 22LR, 1000 yards with a .308 can be boring sometimes on calm days
 
Sweet guys, well now I can see I have some more practice to do hahaha.... was my first whack at LD shooting.

Beer can hit is impressive.

Seeing as now I'm gonna be on a mission for a better scope, any recommendations for the 597? Want somthing with turrets and more than just cross hairs. Somthing under 400 would be ideal.

No its not the best choice for LD shooting but da vife insisted it be a semi as she's not a fan of bolt guns. But, outa the box with the evolution stock and heavy barrel it's pretty damn good I think. Routinely peg 12g hulls at 100 yds 8/10 times. Idealy I wanted a savage mk2 when I bought it a few years back but she said no, and well. ...... I had to listen.

I did however make an insert (6061T6) that (sorta) plugs the ejection port and nests behind the charge handle turning it, in essence, to a bolt gun but have yet to try accuracy tests with it. Jury is still out on that one. But it functioned as expected
 
535 yards, full size buffalo silhouette target. Winchester 525 bulk pack ammo. Ruger 10/22. Have pics to prove it. There is a post on here somewhere with the pics.

I believe that as we were hitting a 4 foot gong at 425 yards with minimags and blazers with a SR 22. Used a few tracers at first to get dialled in. It sure seemed to take forever from time trigger was pulled to when it hit though.
 
I use Falcon FFP scopes for 22lr and 17hmr. Not all that expensive and with a 20MOA rail you have more than enough elevation to dial in. Read the wind....

Would need a lot of Kentucky windage to get it there. A 36gr cci mini mag out of a gun zero'd at 50 yards will drop 16,126 inches, be flying at 312fps, 7.8 ft-lbs of energy, flight time of 11.38 seconds. If there is a wind look out.
 
Did anyone else read this as a challenge :D I've played around at about 350 yds (paced off, not lasered) trying to hit the cut end of a log that was about 12" diameter. 10/22 with issue sights, no wind but artillery angle holdover :) We definitely got more hits than we were expecting.
