Are there problems with the series 80s?

Some folks steer clear due to needless parts and needless complications in assembly after a detailed strip of the firearm. Lawyers prompted by some AD's of Colt's 1911 series 70. The firing pin was steel and if chambered and the pistol forcibly thrown on the ground and striking the muzzle...the inertia of the firing pin would/could overcome the return spring thereby striking the primer of the chambered round and BOOM! Colt's Lawyers freaked out and strongly advised a re-engineering...and thus is born the series 80.

Most of us shooters that aren't lawyers stand by the position that "you should never throw your gun on the floor, accidentally or otherwise" so there ought not be a problem carrying cocked and locked (if us canucks were allowed). AND...if you really, really, really can't resist throwing your gun to the ground chambered, and are concerned about an AD (accidental discharge)...get a titanium firing pin. It's mass can't overcome the return spring unless encouraged with great prejudice via the hammer...no need to re-engineer John Moses' greatest creation.\

But your gun was your Dads, it's free (to you), and it's a Colt! Win, win, win...go shoot it!;)

Simplesam: there is nothing at all wrong with a Series 80. I've got a SIG 1911 with the Series 80 trigger safety and the trigger pull is fantastic. Your pistol is 100% fine...no ifs ands or buts!
