well my grand father passed away and I got $1000 from his estate. I want to buy something that will be meaningful and I will have for the rest of my life. The best thing I can think of is a new rifle. I want to buy a gun for bear/moose hunting and occasionally deer hunting.


I want to spend $1000 on JUST the rifle, give or take a hundred bucks or so, I'm going to buy a bushnell 4200 to put on it aswell. I don't really like wood stocks because this will be a HUNTING rifle and I dont want it to get all dinged up like my shotgun.

give me some suggestions on a good rifle I should buy, Im not to pickey on brands or calibers, but it must be larger then a .270.

dont really care if its used either, as long as fairly new.

OUCH! Go with the Tikka, the laminate stainless has a lot of class if you ask me. The synthetic models are nice as well.

There are lots of good used Sako 75s on the EE the past little while. Awesome rifle and you should be able to get it for your thousand $$$. Good luck with your purchase, and I am sorry to hear about your grandfather.

savage 10fp in .308. If you ever get bored with it you can rebarrel to vitually anything you like.

I would agree with the Tikka T3. I have the synthetic stock with stainless barrel in 30/06. Very accurate right out of the box and nice and light for carrying all day hunting. Synthetic stock is great as it does not get scratched up. For a little more I do like the laminate grey but it's heavier. This would not be a bad thing for a larger calibre like .300 win mag or .338 etc to help with the recoil

Just my preference, but I woud save the nice looking wood for a O/U field shotgun.

Just an idea, but whatever rifle you buy, perhaps you could find an artist to engrave/carve your grandfathers name or initials somewhere on the rifle stock.

Yup. I'd look around for a stainless Winchester M70 or Ruger M77. You could hunt the rest of your days with either and never 'upgrade' for need of a better rifle.

Did your grandad hunt?
If he did, maybe something that will help remember him, like a type of rifle he may have used would be appropriate.
If it were me, I'd lean towards the classic rifles, and stay away from the newer models. Memories stick to classics better.
