Just inherited Some $$$

If I were you I'd consider something timeless like the Ruger 77 or really anything based on the M98 action. Beautiful working guns. I'd also consider a Ruger #1 and the new TC icon. I haven't heard too much about the Icon as far as accuracy and dependability go but it sure is pretty and I'd be happy if one was passed on to me.

Maybe you should answer this question first:

Would your grandfather want you to buy a rifle that HE likes, or would he want you to buy a rifle YOU like?

I think that you'll go nuts if you try to make your decision based on what others like; in saying that, this is what I would do.
I would get one of those Remington 798's from whoever still had it, and immediately have a Dakota Winchester-style safety mounted on it by Ralph Martini. Then every time that I had a little cash left over that was burning a hole in my pocket, I would have it further customized until it was exactly the rifle that I wanted. That would be a family heirloom!

wow almost 50 replies in lil over 2 days. Thanks to everyone that posted so far and I like all the opinions you guys gave.

My grandfather has hunted in his eariler days but in the last 25 years he hasnt. He was 81 when he died and he knew how much I love to hunt.

The reason I dont want a wooden stock is because this will be a hunting rifle and It will be a bush gun and I dont want it to look like my shotgun in a few years ( stain all wore off in most spots and marks in it from trees and such) My field guns are laminated and walnut but I want this one to be synthetic so I can use it and not have to worry about scratching the rifle my grandfather got me.

I know he would want me to buy whatever I liked best, and he would want me to use it as much as possible.

I really like the Thompson Center Icon weather shield but it only comes in 30tc or .308.

Browning is next, followed by maybe a ruger????

for caliber I was thinking maybe 7mm-08 or .300winmag or RUM????.

keep on with the suggestions guys, I'm going to hold off from buying a rifle for atleast a month so I can handle a few I like and keep looking on EE for something I really like.

once again - Bolt action, synthetic stock, larger then .270 and around $1000

thx again.

7MM-08 mild recoil, reasonably flexable, lots of rifle choices. 18" barrel still ok.
.300 WM reasonable recoil, really flexable, lots of rifle choices. 24" barrel still ok
.300RUM why bother? Might as well go to .30-378 if you commit to a 26" barrel and the max load factor of blast and recoil.

Why not build a one off. Call it a 'Gramps Special'.

Well it sounds like a Browning A-bolt or X- bolt would fit the bill!!!! Gotta give a nod to the Tikka T3 Camo too....i have one and it hides marks very well and out shoots my A-bolt....has a wicked trigger too!! :)
