There isn't really a 'best' way. Lots of different ways though. Boiling water, Mineral Spirits bath, Brake Cleaner, Gasoline, etc. I personally soaked mine in Varsol then wiped it down as normal, boiled the smaller parts in water, 1 hour is all it takes, and that includes relubing with your lube of choice.
 
Not really sure what the big deal is. Use a little solvent and an old tooth brush and in literally a few minutes all the metal bits are gleaming.

The stock takes a little more time.
 
Alright, so now I'm getting a bit more motivated to clean an SKS. Problem?- I read that Brake Cleaner is the best way to clean the small parts, but I can't find the brake cleaner at CT! What about the the stock?

Also, I had a partial brainwave: would a sauna get hot enough to melt off cosmo?
 
I bought mine a couple weeks ago from my local dealer, it was already pre-cleaned (i diss-assembled to inspect anyways, but it was good), and he didn't add anything to the cost of it (i paid the going rate of a laminate russian SKS)
 
I love de cosmoing a new rifle! Its just part of the process. I think its part of what keeps me buying more of these beauties... :) I will I had an endless supply of cash and room to storethem/ hide them from the wife.
 
Each batch is different. Some come with lots of cosmo, some with almost none. Mosin's and SVT's almost never have much while SKS's are hit and miss.
 
Yeah about an hour, i boiled all the small parts and ran boiling water over the barrel and action then wiped and oiled them. As far as the stock i wiped it down with hot water a few time and that was pretty mch it. Not buying one for this reason is just silly, its all part of owning one.
 
I use brakeclean on all of the metal parts and wipe the stock with hot water and a rag. I enjoy taking rifles apart and cleaning the cosmo from them, it gets me away from the honeydew list lol

Have dealers ever considered selling 'clean' guns? If they did, I'd buy one, and they'd surely see stock flying off shelves. Not only that- they could charge more for a cleaned gun. Thoughts?

Couldn't find brake cleaner at canadian tire? Are you well?

If you don't want to clean your rifle pay a gunsmith to do it. All the smiths around here offer a cleaning / cosmo removal service.
