This not a .270 vs 308 thread or savage vs TC thread. I am trying to decide between a full camo 270 axis or 308 in plain black or 270 111fcxp3 in black.
its not a question of caliber or which shoots better, its just for a good reliable coyote/deer gun. i just can't seem to decide. out of the 3 options.

Thanks

It doesn't really matter. I like the .270 Winchester for no other reason then it was the first bolt action rifle I bought. I shot it alot and got to know it quite well, but it's not any better then a .308, .30-06 or whatever. These days it's got nothing to do with the cartridge, rather the bullet. Back in the day manufacturers offered bigger, heavier bullets to handle different jobs. Today with modern bullets you can rely on excellent performance even with .223 caliber bullets, which still isn't much of a stretch. When the .22 Hi-power came out, it was considered a dandy tiger rifle! :)eek:) And even plain old regular bullets are still good, but with the right premium, I wouldn't hesitate to use that .270 on anything that walks on this side of the planet. If you have nothing compeling you to buy one over the other, consider what your friends shoot. Perhaps they handload and they might be able to teach you what's required or at least help you load your own. If they don't have the tools required for your cartridge choice, you'd be out of luck. Anyways, go choose your rifle and have fun, there's nothing quite as fun as shopping for a new gun. :)

Oh, don't worry about others opinions of the budget rifles Savage offers, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Do not listen to "why Not" a savage Axis/Edge will shoot sub moa out of the box as virtually any modern rifle will

The fit and finish on a cheap rifle is cheap but the accuracy is not

I own 3, 223 243 and 270, they are not my show rifles but I wouldn`t be scared about putting them against anything Marlin or Browning or ruger makes.

I dont agree with not buying and Axis pretty nice combo, got one in 243 for my grandson and with reloads it does shoot .9 all day long, for the money it is good... JP.

Do not, I repeat, do not purchase any low end Savage firearm, especially the Edge or the Axis. If you want to see the classic cheap poor quality rifle, look no further than Savage's low end offerings IMO. Yes, I owned one.

I'll put my Factory Stevens 200/243.... AS IS out of the box..shooting factory winchester Super X 100 PSP's..up against any other advertised moa entry level gun being prodced by "marlington"...weatherby,...heck even my Brownings can't hold a candle to it with factory fodder!...We now have seven of these rifles tween my friends and me...some have been bedded, some have new triggers...most are stock and they all shoot amazing. All seven seem to show a preference for the Winchester factory ammo...different grains, different cals, but in ALL cases.....they'll shoot it better than the Fed, Rem, and Hdy. I can't stop praising these guns. Lots of aftermarket options available too!! IMHO, Best bang for the buck out there...bar NONE!!

I love how 'might shoot 1/4" tighter' equals "can't hold a candle to". We get so worked up over stuff that doesn't matter, these are hunting rifles. I've yet to encounter one I couldn't hunt with accuracy wise. I don't find myself hunting crickets or tree frogs and 200 yards much, and I've only met a half dozen shooters perhaps in my life that can reliably distinguish a 3/4" shooting rifle from a 1 1/2" shooting rifle from a field shooting position despite what you read on the internet.

To the opening poster, for your purposes, I'd probably go .270 but we're talking green apples to greener apples. The .270 is the slightly more capable cartridge of the two, giving you a useful bullet weight range of 85grs to 150grs. The 150gr .270 bullet is a big game force to be reckoned with, and in 90-110gr loadings it's a dandy predator rifle that shoots flatter than the .308. You're burning more powder, but get more performance. Your call- you'll be happy either way, except perhaps with the rifle in a few years. High end, Savages are not, I've owned them and Stevens 200's and find I like a nicer rifle.

Hi. Where is Eugenia? Mapquest has failed me. Only matters if you're close to or might ever go to one the municipalities that have the silly calibre restrictions. In that case, go with the .270. If not, toss a coin. Either cartridge will do nicely for deer and varmints. Plus moose and bears.
As to the rifle, which one is speaking to you the loudest(rifles do that even though they're inanimate objects) and fits your budget? The package rifles come with a low end, but serviceable scope. You'll have to decide what scope and rings you want with the Axis.

I like the 111 savage better then the axis/edge. The wrist of the axis/edge feels weird to me whereas the 111 feels right and has a decent pad on it. I have a savage 111 in 300wm and a stevens 200 in 25-06. Both guns shoot better then I can. If you can feel them sxs and you'll know which one. Caliber wise I'd take the 270 as I'm used to longer actions in bolt guns. Black stocks can be taped or camoed to fit any terrain as well

Eugenia is just south of collingwood. good lake eugenia, you should find it.

thanks for the opinions, unforutnately i have a baby due in just 6 and a half weeks and can't afford much more than an entry level rifle for now. so i think the savage 111 in .270 will do, seems reliable and accurate.

Both are versatile and come with a lot of bullet options but the .308 you could get cheaper ammo to plink with so that you can get to know your rifle better. Also I would look at a Stevens 200 because of the quality to price ratio. It is a great rifle and unlike the axis etc it is fairly easy to customize later on down the road if you so chose. There are a lot of aftermarket stocks etc for the 200. So to answer your question I would go with a Stevens 200 in .308.

Why not? never commented about the Axis or the Edge at all. Some of you need to learn how to read. :D

Best,
Ted
