Just ordered a stock just like the one below for my Ruger 10/22 except I had it channeled for a .920" barrel. It is in California AAA Extra Fancy Walnut. I ordered it form Richards Stocks. However, I have heard some really bad things about this company in the gunsmithing section of this forum.

Well, I hope it comes out as nice as this one.

P.s: Does anyone on this board finish gunstocks? These stocks come unfinished and minor sanding and fitting may be needed. I am no handy man and would love to send it to someone who has finished a gunstock before ( Preferably many, many, many times before) Let me know if you know someone or could help.

Thanks

I have refinished a few from boyds gunstocks and gunstocks.com.

They require a lot of sanding, some final fitting, don't expect your action to fall in perfect, it probably will not. If you have a dremel it will help... I have finished in tru oil and another special gunstock finish that I got from the States... Expect a lot of sanding and a lot of coats of finish, around 10 or so.

I was looking for a finished product like the one in the picture. Nice and Shiney and glossy.

You say you make custom gun stocks? Have you made any for the Ruger 10/22 LR? If you can send me some ideas of the kind of stock types you make ( thumbhole) and types of wood that would be great.

I do no production work, and to be honest....my pricing would put a 10/22 out of the realms of reality. I generally re-stock fine english firearms, and do so on a custom commision basis. As far as woods go? Turkish/english/black (burl) walnut, most of the rosewoods, silky oak, figured maple, crotch and/or flame mahaogany, ebony, bocote, zircote....name it and I've probably worked it.

I am generally not a fan of the high gloss plastic look, especially with a fine piece of wood. Generally I finish walnuts in an oil with a french polish (More of a "sheen" or "glow" than gloss...kind of like the finish on a fine piece of furniture. But hey...I can lay on laquer with the best of them!

Well I just called and cancelled my order. After reading all those bad things about Richards on this forum and on rimfirecentral It felt like it had to been done.

I have heard that they have bad custome service, and when I cancelled my order, the lady on the phone didn't even say goodbye or anything, she just hung up the phone.

Gatewood here I come.

Well after cancelling my order with Richards due to the many bad things I have read on this forum and on rimfirecentral I have been talking to Claude Gatewood about a stock. Great guy, customer service is outstanding.

Decided on a Extra Fancy walnut stock in this style

This is what mine will look like except I will have a checkered pistol grip, Ebony grip Cap and Extra Fancy Walnut.

These next 8-10 weeks are going to be a long wait. I will post a pic when all is said and done.

It sounds like you'll have a pretty nice stock. I've seen some of the gatewood stocks on rimfirecentral. Beautiful stuff. I've got a project in mind with some fancy wood like that, gotta finish a few other things first though.

I really like the high gloss look. I paint gun stocks with automotive urethane. I haven't done too many yet but I'd like to get into it more seriously (but still for a hobby). I also paint cars for a hobby so it's a skill that translates over pretty easy. I like to do the candy high gloss (similar to what tuck does on rfc). That fancy wood would look good with a mirror smooth clear and perhaps with a bit of rootbeer tint to darken the wood a bit.

I look forward to seeing pics.

Ordered a Prone bone grey/gray from richards for my Custom 77/17. I was relatively unimpressed with how much work had to be done. In the end it came out looking respectable although there were still some flaws in the finished product. I don't know if it was partially flawed in the making or if it was strictly my fault. I ended up selling it. I would not recommend finishing it yourself unless you have patience and knowledge when it comes to proper fitting.

Hi dh79, I will definately post a pic when I get it. I also have a Lilja Barrel, .920" for my 10/22 on order. Looking foward to getting it.

Armament, that stock in your picture looks great. I heard from many others that Richards stocks came in a kind of poor condition and needed alot of work. The Gatewood stock that I have on order is going to be finished by him so no work needed on my part. Good thing because I am a useless *** when it comes to any kind of handy work. Hey I just noticed that that's my old spoting scope in the background. I thought it looked familiar. Cool

I will kept y'all posted. (Thats red-neck talk for you all) Just being dumb. Lol.

It has been quite a while since I placed my custom stock order but here are some pic's Claude sent of my stock. It is a varmint model and Claude mentioned that the whole stock has this figure on it- 3D all the way. Very Very Excited. Can't wait to see some more pic's

its a laminate but I used BLO and did next to no external sanding as I didnt want to reduce thechunky feel at all. They tell everyone to use a spray lacquer, I suppose glossy varnish look is in in the US.
