Just Ordered a Zastava 22 Hornet from John...

Well, I put down some cash on another fine piece from "John's Gun Vault", this time a Zastava 22 Hornet based on a "mini mauser" action. My last acquisition from John was VERY positive: a beautiful and mint 1935 Venezuelan 24/30 Short Rifle. So I am sure this rifle will be no less than perfect.

What are your preferences and suggestions for a reliable, accurate factory load?

My main uses will be punching paper at 100 and 200 yard targets. I may also consider small varmint control in the future (coyote and smaller), but for now my focus is on enjoying the hornet at the local range.

Oh, I also purchased a Leapers 3-9x40mm Compact "5th Gen. w. Duplex Reticle" scope. John's team will be mounting it for me. Not the most expensive scope, but likely sufficient for my uses at the local range.

Check out "John's Gun Vault". He's got six more NEW Zastava's: 2 in 22 MAG, and 4 in 22 LR. A few are very limited production, and in fact, one of them is #1 off the production line! If my wife wasn't threatening to castrate me over my gun purchases, I'd get an extra 22 LR! They are well made pieces.

This looks an awful lot like the Remington 5 I bought three years ago? :confused:


Also made by Zastava, great gun btw. Has been good for me and shoots as well as I can. Used it with the iron sights for years and then got a Bushnell rimfire scope.

Those Serbians have made Yugo Mausers for a while, I think they know what they are doing.

I believe you're right that the Remington 5 is a rebranded Zastava CZ99. I handled a CZ99 a few months ago at an auction and thought it was quite a lovely, trim rifle. Fortunately, I asked the auctioneer about the missing bolt before bidding... someone ended up getting a suprise when they bought it without a bolt for only a little less than the new price.

The Remington 798 and 799 also used the Zastava actions and barrels. The "mini mauser" action used in the 22 Hornet is the same as in the Remington 799.

The CZ99 is a 22 LR and I believe the action is a little different from the 22 Hornet action (rimfire vs centrefire), but nonetheless, a fine set-up on the CZ99/Remington 5.

Got my gun today!!! Thank you John!!! What a stand up guy. If there was ever ANY doubt about Marstar and John, put it to rest! I have now purchased two top notch rifles from John. Great service, fast shipping and real quality products!

The Zastava Hornet 22 just bleeds quality, from the solid smooth action, deeply blued barrel and action and the satin finish walnut stock. She looks real mean with the scope mounted.

Dear god in heaven is ammo expensive! Picked up 4 boxes (200 rounds) of Winchester ammo at $45 per box. Better be premium stuff.
