Just picked up a 375H&H Mag!

Thanks to EE I picked up a Remington safari 798 in 375 H&H Mag, in awesome condition! I cant wait to try it out this weekend! Came with bases, rings, scope and a bunch of ammo. Anyone able to recommend a good round, or load?

Start with win 760 and a 270g bullet for a big 308 like trajectory. At this size bullet construction is not a huge factor. On deer you can eat right up to the hole!
 
My 375 loves exactly 72.5-73 grains of RL15 and 260 grain accubonds. I can shoot 5 shots under an inch with a 4 power scope at 100 yards mine. What a great cartridge, I love mine. I am sure lot of guys will chime in about other loads> I believe that 300 grain bullets work with 760 although I haven't tried it yet. Good luck and have fun!

Those people have never used a .375 H&H, it is without a doubt the most universal cartridge on the planet from 20 lb game to 2 ton game and it doesn't blow up anything!!! I've shot 15-20 lb duiker right up to hippos with mine and everthing in between, it is an amazing cartridge which is why it has just celebrated it's 100th birtday !!! Although not my choice in rifles you have an outstanding cartridge , enjoy the old girl, she'll never let you down on anything up to and including elephant. That cannot be said of many cartridges !!

I've had different results on coyotes.
 
The Remington core-lokt factory loads seem quite soft. My brother had one expand so much it didn't exit in a sask coyote. But that's the fault of the bullet, not the cartridge.

There are bullets in every caliber that shouldn't be used on game for the obvious reasons stated above. One shouldn't load the 255 gn intended for the 375 Win either and expect "eat up to the hole performance". I assumed in my little discertation that one would use the correct bullet for the game being persued.

So true. I turned 220gr FP hornady's into varmint grenades.

For a load I'd say go with 270gr TSX's if your gun likes them. In my Zastava I'm shooting 300gr TSX's over 69gr H4895 and it loves them. I would swap out to the 270gr but they are getting hard to find, it would cost a couple hundred bucks, and I have about 400 bullets in 300gr...
 
I'm heading out Sat afternoon for our Sunday mornings 4 point or better mule deer opening taking my 22" barreled T/C Prohunter in 375H&H I have it loaded with 250gr TTSX with RL17 powder @ 2620fps.

I'll be hunting alpine last buck we shot up there when we went back in 1 1/2 days later a grizzly had buried the gut pile and was laying on top of it last time my buddy went in he spotted 6 different grizzlies.

No need to push it faster in this light 7.5lbs carbine = I have it zeroed 2.5" high @ 100 yards, 1" high @ 200 yards, 8" low @ 300 yards if I have to push it beyond 300 it is 25" low @ 400 yards.
 
I use 270 gn TSX in mine and my boy (#1 son) uses 260 ABs in his Ruger, both have proven to be excellent bullets on game. I load RL 15 behind my 270 TSX for 2900 fps, not all rifles will get this velocity but my 700 does with a 24" barrel and the load is 100% safe and has been used in 55 deg heat in Zambia without so much as an ejector mark.
I know fellows who use the 235 gn Speer for light game and have claimed great success with it, but I don't believe it's an "eat up to the hole" bullet. I suggest you play with it a bit and try some bullets and powders THAT YOU CAN GET NOW, you'll probably find, like most that the .375 H&H likes almost any bullet and any med slow powder, right from IMR 4064 to H4831 SC with heavy bullets. Not a complicated cartridge at all, and a real friendly reloader number.
I'm working with a 285 gn Matrix in a 375 Wby lately and a 300 gn Part load for another H&H I have, but haven't been able to make it to the range in the past month.
 
I have had a Win Super Express mod 70 in 375 H&H in the safe for 5 years! Finally took it out and man what a tack driver, I have l have loaded the Speer 235gr with sub minute accuracy, Speer 285gr Grand slams are close to one hole, I also loaded up some 1950's vintage Remington 270gr wich was minute of angle.
The one thing I am learning is how vesatal round and very enjoyable shooter.
I have been using IMR4350 wich it seems to be the ticket without fooling around!
Thanks to my friend Dave to get me started shooting my medium bores again!

How many grains of RL15 are you using??? I was doing the recommended max with absolutely no pressure signs (73grains) with Federal 215 primers, and 260 NAB's. I believe I was only getting just over 2700 but have to check my handbook.

Don't ask cause you probably don't want to know. Safe and book do not always go hand in hand. That said I recall Doug saying about 80 gr is all you can fit into a 375 H&H casing without bulging it...
 
Sharp shooter........north of 73 gns by a bit, but like I said all rifles are different. Again I'll say that my load is safe in MY rifle and has been used in EXTREME heat in Africa with no pressure signs and my primers are still tight after 3-4 loads, so............YMMV.

Just ignore Gerald (Freyr_255), he's just jerking my chain, besides you can use way more than 80 gns in a 375 case, depends on what powder and bullet. What I actually told him was that if you tried using more than 85 gns of ###X with a 300 gn boattail bullet you get case bulging from the heavy compression.

After more than 40 years of reloading for hundreds of cartridges, both factory and wildcat, and reading my brass and primers, I find they never lie to me unlike the lawyer approved manuals nowadays. My load development always starts within the parameters of a manual, but doesn't necessarily end with their top load. Factors such as throat length and bore diameter, chamber dimensions and even magazine length, vary so greatly from rifle to rifle that load development is individual to each rifle........hence the term load DEVELOPMENT. I load to get the best ballistics and accuracy for each rifle, within the limits of my brass, and I never, never let anyone else use my ammo.

Il try and post some pictures of the rifle, when i figure out how too.
I fired of a box of Remington 270gr SP's today, it did well with them. No sub moa group by any means, but good enough for deer sized tragets. Im planning on trying some different ammo. I still havent picked up reloading equiptment, but this rifle is going to make me buy it now.
