Just picked up my first .308, which ammo should I look for, which to avoid?

I picked up some Sako TRG ammo for $53/box loaded with the 175gr Lapua Scenar bullet - excellent value for a great bullet. That was just this past week at Cabela's. I've also got some of the 150gr Gamehead ammo for hunting and plinking - that was $35/box and adds to my brass stash for reloading.

Ultimately I'd probably use an FMJ-based handload for plinking, and a cup and core 150-180 grain load for hunting. Lots of 165-180 grain bullets for 1km precision shooting as well.

When you say 308, heavy 20" barrel I assume you have the same Tikka T3x CTR like I have. I can only say I've put nothing but reloads through mine and have had good success out to ~800 yards with 168gr Sierra Match Kings

Maybe one day but I actually grabbed a Ruger American hunter (0.850") at the muzzle.

Handloading is the way to go to keep prices down and to achieve maximum accuracy potential.

For the hunting and long range I would recommend the Berger VLD hunting bullet. Excellent accuracy with these and they are very effective. I've personally killed at least 12-15 animals with them and have seen friends, family, and clients put down another 20 or more. Game from deer, bear, wolves, elk, and moose. Excellent performance every time. From 7m to 458m they've always provided an effective wound channel and when bullets have been recovered they've held together quite well.

I use them for long range as well so my dope is consistent. I've shot them to 1km with my 300WSM.
