I just purchased a 700 Rem BDL 25-06 off the EE from a fellow CGNer, don't have it in hand yet but thought I'd let y'all know anyway. Have a 250-3000 in a 77 RSI Stainless, a 257 Bob in a 700 Classic and a 257 Wby in a 700 CDL SF........now my first ever 25-06. I have a specific purpose for this rifle.......it will be my "back door" rifle on my acreage in B.C. I have a problem with skunks, coyotes and the odd problematic black bear as well as a couple neighbors say they have seen a couple wolves and we had a cougar hanging around for a several weeks. With a dog, 2 donkeys and a couple horses I need to protect, I decided a while ago I would look for an inexpensive rifle in the 25-06 to 7X57 range of calibers. This 25-06 came up so I grabbed it. I intend to load 125 gn Matrix bullets if it'll shoot them well and then it won't matter where on my property the nuisance may be, the 25-06 should be capable of dealing with it.
I went through my inventory of rifles and I have several that would do the job nicely, however they are all too pretty too stand at the door and get banged around. I have a Mod 7 in 358 there right now but it's just not the ticket for the coyotes at the top of the pasture at 300 mtrs. My 6.5X55 is in a 700 Classic as is my Bob and I don't want to bang them up, my 7-08 is in a 700 MS Custom Shop......certainly don't want that banging around the porch. My one 260 is in a limited run 700 CDL SF and the same story, too nice for the porch. I did consider the other 260 which is a Mod 7 CDL changed to a plastic stock and it would have worked but the only load I have for it is 100 gn load for the boy and he does shoot it occasionally........besides as we all know any excuse for a new rifle AND a new cartridge for me..........Now I have a use for all that 270 Win brass I have accumulated all these years..........it's no good for anything else, so 25-06 it will become.

Sorry no pics but then it just looks like every other 700 BDL........

One of my favorite calibers to shoot.... very underrated do all....

Say, did that full stock BSA arrive yet? Th one you beat me to? Is it everything I hoped it would be?.... lol

I like it too. With the 120gr bullets it is pretty much like a .270 with 130gr bullets. :)

Keep in mind that the .270 brass is too long and will need a fair amount of trimming.

Oh c'mon 1899.......................after 40 years of loading and wildcatting? f:P:

I think with 125 gn Matrix it will be superior to any 270..........and if I need more, well I won't give you a list from there up, suffice it to say I got it covered........

Picked up one myself not too long ago. A Savage 112BVSS that I put decent glass on, a Leupold VX III, 6.5-20 Long Range with Varmint reticle.

:eek:I was amazed by the out of the box accuracy of this 'inexpensive' rifle.

Pardon the home made target:redface:.

Supposed to be a great cartridge and should do well for the intended application.

Not familiar with the Matrix bullets. Who makes them and what is their construction?

Just looked at a manual and Nosler shows the 25-06 at nearly 3200 with a 120 and Retumbo..........excellent, that means I should have no difficulty getting 3100 with a 125, I'm impressed !! Should be an excellent "back door" rifle.

But, but, butt, buttt............the 270 is so easy to find and hardly a nare difference.......aye ........... Ted?

Yah yah, I know, gartzs a busted car to fix, among other things.

Pull up Matrix on the internet, Marshal's a guy making bullets out of Van area. Look him up and read about his stuff, it's good stuff..............annealed jackets and bonded cores, what's not to like, not to mention his outstanding reputation with the bench boys all over NA.
Ted (Why Not?) has used several of his bullets on game and swears by them, I have yet to fling one in anger but will be shortly............

Fixed it for you.

Coal shovel...where are you?

Excellent choice Douglas, the 25-06 has lots of reach for your needs.
I've had three and now due for another.... had my first when I was still a flatlander..

Statistacly and undeniably, proven by deer pest removal experts and long range antelopers to be the best cartridge in the history of the world. YVMV

Ah BUM.......you're a mind reader, but I didn't actually want to put it in print cause then, well, you know.........at least not without a chronograph tape to back it up...........
