I've recently been starting to specialize my collection a little more and have have started to really evaluate each piece in my collection to try and determine what could be let go to fund pieces more in line with my general collecting interests.

Among the rifles I came across that has been sitting in my safe, is the following model 98 mauser.

It's mismatched numbers, but in great overall shape with a great bore.

Can anyone provide any background on this firearm?

Also, in case I do decide to let it go, what are the value on these as of current?

I appreciate the help.

Looks like a German 98k that was fitted with a straight bolt. The stock appears to have the clearance cuts for the standard bent bolt.

M48 BO dont have the stock grouve near the bolt. Strait bolt could mean its Czech VZ. 24 or Yugo M24 origin. The stock could have been switched, which is missing the classic german dissaembly hole btw.

Late style stock. Disassembly hole is on the right side of the buttplate. Just visible in the one photo.

Are there any markings on it at all?

Either side of the barrel below the rear sight?
On top of the follower?
On the safety lever?

After looking closely at it, it seems the only marking other than numbers are two identical looking 4 pointed square cross or x type markings.

One is on the bolt handle by the receiver.

The other is on side of the safety lever.

They are both the approx same size.

You can see the one marking on the bolt lever in the first photo. Its the same as the one on the safety latch.

It looks like a Yugo rework to me (scrubbed markings and the late war semi-krieg's stock). Maybe they used a Gew 98 bolt that they had lying around that they blued?

there are little tiny marks on my spanish mauser that almost look like tiny
fluer do lis,
def fits your little x description, but mine does not have that hooded sight.

Take the gun out of the stock and look for the barrel and receiver markings.

It looks like possibly a scrubbed Yugo, or Czech, or DDR rework.

Stock and bolt might have been swapped out?

Stock looks postwar as the buttplate looks blued.

Need better, clearer pics.
