Just put this temperature controler together. Haven't tuned it yet. PID settings?

I wanted to get a casting thermometer but after seeing the prices of a Lyman unit I thought I could build a very accurate temperature colntoler for less. Now not only do I have a digital thermometer for melting ingots I also have a controler for my casting pot. All for less than the price of a Lyman thermometer. It's amazing how technology is the only thing that gets better and cheaper with time.

The controler and solid state relay w/heatsink were bought on Amazon and the rest I had kicking around my shop.

Has anyone else built one of these? I'd love to see pics and hear what your PID settings are to give me a starting point for tuning it.

I've built a similar system for controlling the boil on my wort when brewing beer. The PID controls the SSR that lets the 240v thru to the hot water element in the kettle. I crammed it all in a 12 by 12 box. How you got a PID and a SSR in that small box is wizardry.

mine was a cheap ebay PID so it only display's Celsius. i keep mine set to 380C works perfectly.

the outlet on the left of the PID is so i can remove the temp probe.

I used an old power supply so the power in is at the bottem and power out is on top with a power switch in the middle.

i have originally put the temp probe in the bottom near the spout but it wasn't getting good contact with the pot so it didn't work to good so i bought the same temp probe you did. my main pot is the pro 420 now too.
