I just recieved a $500 bonus from the boss, and would like to spend it on a rifle. If you had $500 (before tax) to spend on a 25-06 or 243, what would you buy? I have scopes and rings, so just the rifle.

If I HAD to come in under $500, I'd find a good Stevens 200. They're surprisingly nice rifles, and based on your choice of calibres I'd surmise that it's going to be a Saskatchewan deer rifle - something for which the 200 is more than suited.

Or should he add $100 more of his own money to the $500 and buy a Savage with accutrigger and detachable magazine? Lots of great possibilities if you factor in used rifles as well.

What about an old Savage 99, while we're on the topic of used rifles?

I'd still run to the hills for the NEW Stevens 200 though, but that's me.

The marlin XL7 comes in 25-06, so if you're set on spending your $500 now, that's what I'd suggest. I'd prefer a 25-06 to a .243 by far.

But what I might also suggest is but the $500 in a safe spot and save up the next $200-$300 you need to buy a better gun! Like and FN model 70, or a Tikka.

Watch the local buy/sell papers for something decent used. There is not a lot new under that price point thats not a complete POS other than the Savage/Stevens and occasionally a Remington 700 SPS for close to that money. Bass Pro had them on last week for $499.
You can usually pick up a decent used rifle for that if you look around a bit.

I'd go for the savage 11, its a bit smoother than the 200. I haven't tried one yet but an axis maybe right up your alley. I stuck with Savage for my budget rifles. I've heard good things about the marlins too though.

Stevens in a 25-06 and you will still have a little left over for a new set of dies or ammo if you dont reload .
Besides that if you ever go to sell it you will get most of your money back out of it ,losts of people looking for cheap rifles
