Just competed in a 1000 metre competition with an out of the box Savage 12BVSS .243 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 10 x 40 scope. With rain and windy conditions my best target was a 10, a 9 and a 7 for a total of 26 with a 3 shot group size of 11 3/4 inches. My youngest son (age 36) who had never fired a rifle before fired a 10, a 7 and a 7 for a total of 24 with a group size of 11 inches. A phenominal gun! I was shooting unlimited and, of course, didn't take first prize but was right up there....had my 7 been a 10 I would have walked away with top honours. We were shooting at an official 600 yard target.
I was using a 90 grain Lapua with 44 grains of 4350. The Lapua has a BC of .420 and at 900 feet ASL, before the shoot, we chronographed the load with a muzzle velocity of 3246.0. At the shoot altitude was 4100 feet, humidity was 95% and temperature was 65 F and the elevation angle 7 degrees.
I take my hat off to Savage. It's going to make one excellent coyote gun.
