JW-14 vs Ruger 10 22

Spend another 75 bucks and get a Marlin 795. More dependable and accurate than a 10/22(and cheaper).
And I wouldn't count on those over cap mags being legal forever, the way the RCMP likes controlling things.

^agreed, vote #3 for a Marlin 795, or a Marlin 60 (same as the 795, only a tube mag) I've owned a new 10/22, and I'll never buy another. You can get an MCARBO spring kit for the Marlins that tame-down the trigger significantly, and you're still about $100 less than a 10/22.

The high-capacity mags~Pro-Mag make them for the Marlin 795...and even though I now own 2 x 795s, I don't feel a shred of temptation to buy one. You're shooting offhand only with a giant stick mag, or frying-pan-sized drum hanging off the bottom of your gun. The "cool" factor wears off quick, at least for me. Regardless, I have had good luck with Norinco bolt guns (still have one) but the Marlin trumps it, and the 10/22 in my books. No personal experience with the Remington 597.

"The JW-14 takes Squires Bingham magazines"

Currently Armscor warranty repairs in Canada consists of finding another model 20p on your own initiative for parts in a private sale, so the fact that the JW14 takes S&B magazines is not an advantage.

Also you can no longer order standard capacity (25-30 round) .22lr magazines from Numrich, so you can forget about that.

In spite of all this, the S&B & any firearm that uses a similar action is a good gun.

The steel / blued / parkerized S&B magazines are worth the asking price if you can find them :(

The Ruger is a lot of fun, and they are reliable and do have ALOT of upgrades, if you can afford them. The Marlin is an excellent entry level gun and good craftsmanship, accurate, and cheap. The Remington 597 is decent, cheap, and there are a few decent upgrades. The Norc is very basic in craftsmanship and quality. They do have a hit and miss reputation but they are dirt cheap.
I have owned all 4 and I still have my Marlin and and 10/22. The 10/22 is my favourite shooter and grouse rifle when I feel like I need to ground scuttle a few and the Marlin comes out every now and again and it does a great job. I put a Hogue stock on my Ruger and it fits me better to hunt with. Save your coin and get something decent. A Marlin is only a few bucks more and offers a lot in the long run.

Well, I can't argue against the idea that Norinco is "hit and miss"....but I guess I got lucky with my JW-14, I love it - and I paid $179.99!

I love my 10/22 as well, but after adding a Nomad stock and GSG 110 round drum mag, I'm about $650 lighter.

Now, the original magazines are not well built...mine had a hairline fracture...and so did the replacement. But Champion 25 round mags work with only a tiny bit of sanding (in my case anyway X 2).

Here I am firing it with the Champion.

My jw14 broke after about 500 rounds.. firing pin broke now I have no idea where to buy parts for it... buy the ruger.

The guys at Marstar should be able to find it. Any machinist could probably make one too, but I would just buy another jw 14 then you've got another mag plus a parts gun ;)

The S&B has a similar firing pin. Western Gun Parts has firing pins for the Squires Bingham 20p, as per a recent conversation with one of their parts staff personnel. The same firing pin may fit the Norinco JW14. I don't have a JW14, but it would not hurt to give them a call.

The firing pin for the JW14 is similar to the S&B, that is it combines the function of a striker and firing pin in one part. They are L shaped, so the stress riser is on the internal corner. It is not a good idea to dry fire with these guns. I hope this helps. Best regards, Tony
