K-31 Accuracy Tweaks

This rifle looks like a good candidate for glass bedding.

Jim,,,,Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Tweak away, but no glass bedding.

Sorry, I know, it's yours, do what you want.

I have attended a lot of military surplus (style) matches over the years.

They all seem to have major tweaking allowed to the rifles.

I would love to attend a match where there are no tweaks allowed, something roughly along the lines of IPSC production rules.

Tweaks = adding too or adjusting the original form of the rifle.

You could replace your parts as needed with factory original parts or adjust worn ones back factory specs, but only for best fit and function, no modifications - shims,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ect,,,,,,,,,,ect,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ahhh, my two cents worth today!

I guess I'm too much of a purist!

OK, shot the shimmed rifle today.

Big improvement: groups are round, not vertical; Groups show a progression with the powder charge increase; and they are smaller than before.

I tried 175 Sierra Matchking and Hornady 155 AMax, with 8506 powder (I assume it is similar to a fast lot of 4350).

Best groups with both bullets was about 1.5" (9x scope, off a sandbag at 100 yds).

I would post Before and After pictures, but I have just signed up to the $25 CGN and don't yet know how to post a picture.

My shims were 4 thou. One behind the front recoil lug and one at the rear lug. I don't know which one is now bearing harder and making the difference. I might yet put some Devcon in there.

But this rifle is now good to go for the next Winona shoot. I will shoot it at 100 yards.

FIGURED OUT HOW TO POST A PICTURE.

These groups would be poor for a lot of rifles, but I think are good for a milsurp. Main thing to me is that they are round, consistent, and show a change with a change to the powder charge.

Let me know if you want some brass sheet shims. Thickest I have is .015" and down to .001"
I assume you meant IMR 4350, not 4850?

When I opened up the rifle, I got the impression the barrel had a heavy coat of wax on it. Is that a standard treatment? No sign of rust.

Only among some serious Swiss target shooters who know about it. It is not against current or past Swiss Military shoot regulations and specifications.
What is on yours might be the previous vegetable based, amber colored grease(Waffenfett), literally weapons grease) used before the current Automatenfett (automatic weapons grease.).

May have applied just as a rust prevention measure. Might have been it's use that made target shooters realize it's benefit for sticky barrel channels.

Clear(ish) wax would be less messy.
Bees Wax, Floor wax paste, even bullet lube.
Waffenfett is amber in color when new and thinly applied.

Guisan was selling the two version of Swiss grease in these tins that look like shoe polish tins for ease of mailing the products.

Is he (she) still selling Waffenfett?

He died April 2015.
I'll see if his wife still has some, doubtful. Like finding virgin unicorns last 5 years.

I Emailed her, will let you know.

I'm going to have to try these tweaks on my k31.

It shoots very consistent 155 grain cast loads but I've noticed vertical stringing when I use full power hand loads. I always suspected bedding problems but I knew the k31 is a different animal and I didn't want to mess it up.

Thanks diopter.

I have not yet done anything to my K-31 other than add a pair of 4 thou shims to points A & B. I have been testing it with 155 AMax and today, with 168AMax and found it will shoot decent, predictable groups.

I get spoiled shooting target rifles that group a half inch, so 1.5" does not immediately impress, but really, for a stock military rifle, that is very good and all I personally expect.

Toady I shot my K-31 and my tricked out #4 at 100 yards off a rest. Both have 3-9 scopes.

OK, what is 8106 powder?
Any idea who makes it and who sells it in Canada/
Assuming it is close to 4350?

Automatenfett is black and gooey, and intended for use on semi-and fully automatic firearms. It can be splatty if you leave it flapping around after too liberal and application. Not that it's no good, it's just that plain ol' waffenfett is just that - a plain mixture of what were then readily available materials, made up into a good all-round grease for inside and out of a service firearm. It is not a magic elixer, and any good modern grease of the same kind will do the same job, equally well. I've been using the same tub of Shakespeare spinning reel grease since the late 1980's, and all three of my Swiss gals are still in great condition.

It is/was made in Valleyfield, Quebec as a military powder by Expro (the plant that made the IMR powders). It is about the same speed as a fast lot of 4350, but fine grained, like 4895. I was trying to convince Expro that they should be selling it as a commercial powder.
