K-31 Ka-boom

Holy ####, Slug. Glad you're okay. That receiver sure looks brittle where it's broke out on the left side.

Are the spare parts from you or the rifle?

WHHHAAAT???

Never heard of this happening - sorry to hear your rifle bit it, but glad to hear that you're ok!

That;s bizarre how it did it too; why would the barrel and chamber be relatively intact while the reciever ring blow apart? Did you put the bolt back in for the picture, or did it stay in there throughout it too?

What was your load of 2400 supposed to be? Any filler in the case?
.314 is .007 over-sized for a like new k-31 barrel groove and it's bore is smaller than a usual .30 cal bore.

Lots of spare rifle parts. I'm keeping any body parts that still function.

The load was 22 gr. of 2400 with no filler.

The bolt is frozen in place and isn't going anywhere and the barrel now rattles in the receiver and can be turned by hand.

BTW, the calibre is 7,5 mm., not 7 mm., and the bullet was slightly oversize for the bore

From the safety of my armchair I'd say that thing had almost certainly taken abuse in the past, or was simply faulty from before then....

No reason why that load and bullet size should have done that... unless the bolt wasn't fully locking? I haven't seen that many Kabooms, but I'd guess one on an enfield with too much headspace could look similar? Same situation same results?

Here's another one.
You can see the firing pin. Obviously, the case let go; perhaps there was a fracture in the case?

I think that was my old gun.....last time I shot it was in a milshoot at EOHC. My load was 46g Varget, 150g FMJ which was a pretty mild load even by this rifles standards.....I don't know anything about those reduced pistol powder loads. I bought the rifle from P&S and put a couple hundred rounds through it....I have another set up with a diopter that I shoot regularly.
Glad you are OK.

Maybe it's just the pic, but it looks like the barrel cracked on the top at the end of the threads.....?

Hmmm. It's times like these when you are suddenly aware of the uses of safety venting on some bolts and recievers... Interesting that it looks like it followed the extractor up, then blew the whole top off the reciever in one piece.

Just a question for those more in the know out there - is it possible that just a very weakened case could cause this? IE, if the case head were to fail and leak gas into the bolt assy, could this happen to an otherwise completely safe gun?
