Just bought a K-98 mauser. Brand new(for lack of a better word) Never been fired. What do I do to clean it up really nice before I shoot it? Its got oil on it and that black flaky stuff on the stock.

If it's an inexpensive Russian capture K-98, then it isn't new and likely has been fired plenty, and that flaky stuff on the stock is probably shellac.

Take the action out of the stock and get rid of all that cosmo and crap. I used engine degreaser and WD-40 for most of the metal work followed up by ample amounts of CLP.

As for the shellac, denatured alcohol will remove it, or at least get rid of the flakes. If you want to refinish the stock then some TSP salt or Easy Off will strip the stock right down. Though you might want to avoid Easy Off if you have a laminate stock.

It was 500 bucks.

Recently 2 K98k rifles in excellent, matching condition sold in the US for over US$2 000 each. If you have a brand new, unfired K98, you might want to get expert advice on how to deal with it before you touch it.

Do you have any pics of the markings/stamps? Do all the numbers match? check the receiver, front barrel band, bolt, bottom of the magazine plate, butt plate and the stock. If all those match you have one really nice piece of history. If not I'd say you over paid, my K98 has all matching numbers and even the eagle and swastika stamps and I paid $250.

Either way I'd like to see pics of it if you have any.

If you paid $250 for an original stamped matching non-refurb German K98k in ANY unsportered condition (except one that is orange with heavy rust) within the last 5 years, you stole it and should turn yourself in.
