Noob gun owner here.

Got my first SKS recently and ordered a Mosin today. ( even mosin was really hard to find)

Looking to get a third one, wanted a mauser 98 but they seem to be really hard to find.

Saw a great condition k31 at 1 100 $ and people seem to say it is even better than a mauser ( except for the historical value of course )

Also ammo wise, which ammo is easier/cheaper to find ?

If you have both, what would be your opinion ? Should I wait to find a 98 or go for the k31 ?

'k31 at 1 100'

What does that mean? $1100? 1 in a hundred?

'and people seem to say it is even better than a mauser ( except for the historical value of course )'

An average K31 will shoot better than a good Mauser, all day long. A good K31 will outshoot most everything on the range - proven fact - only an equally good m/96 will give it a contest. Providing you are shooting GP11, or a handload that you have concocted that is identical - some folks have actually beaten GP11, but it's hard to do.

1100 is really high for a K31, I would wait for one in the 700-900$ range to pop up. GP-11 is less common than 8mm Mauser, but it is less expensive and better quality. A quick search shows me 49.99$ a box of 60 for the GP-11 vs the cheapest 8mm Mauser I can see for sale is 23.99$ a box of 20.

That being said there is a variety of Mausers out there so you could for example pick one in 7.62 Nato reducing your costs for ammo further.

Ultimately it is up to you and what you want. I highly recommend not impulse buying something just because it is available now, if you wait a little bit and keep a constant lookout you will find what your looking for at a reasonable price.

I own a K98 and used to have a K31. K31 is superior in terms of accuracy and ammo is easy to find right now. GP11 is essentially surplus match ammo which makes the cost even easier to justify.

I think it goes without saying the K98 is more historically significant, and is a fine rifle for shooting.

I’d say get both, grab the K31 first as they are rising in price dramatically.

The other advantage of the K31 is that when supplies of GP11 dry up, there is a much wider selection of .308" bullets to reload with compared to 8mm.

Prvi Partizan 7.5x55 ammo or empty cases are readily available.

Find a nice K98. Ammo is easy to find, they are interesting, and when they have good bores, shoot just as well. Or do what I did, and find a Nowegian conversion in 30-06.

It's a heck of a lot easier to find a K31 in excellent condition for a cheaper price than a K98.

Either rifle in excellent condition should be good shooters.

As for ammo????

Reload, then it's always available. The nice thing about the K31 is that it shoots any 308 diameter bullet and there are dozens of them available at any store that sells reloading supplies. Brass is readily available as well.

k98 Israeli in 7.62mm
German made steel. Mint condition barrel.
All the awesomeness of the mauser action, lazer accuracy and affordable very common ammo.
I got one for $450 last year. It's literally my favorite gun I own now.

Lever arms had the Russian capture k98 for $650 a while back, not sure if they still do but it's worth a check
The k31 seems to be in the $900 to $1000 range
Seen some for less on the EE, just need to keep checking

get the K31. it should be around $900 though. then order a diopter from Swiss Products in the USA. they just had a huge price drop since they are shipping direct.

K31's are still cheap compared to their manufacturing value. Try making the same gun today using the same techniques, it'll run you into the couple thousand range if you can even find the manpower.

I guess, you haven't looked at the price of the K31's these days...

or .. move to Calgary and join the Swiss Club! We have ten K31's that you can use for free, and sell ammo for 60 cents each. That's probably not in the cards, but for anyone else ..

I have actually. I've also bought and sold a few over the spring. An all matching K98 in excellent condition inside and out runs $1500 or more, depending on manufacturer and dates. Even then, nothing less than $1300 in that condition.

The only K31 rifles I've seen come close to $1200 are the lovely Swiss Police issue rifles with matching bayonets.

Lots of K31s are out there from $500 -$800 with excellent bores, all matching but with a few dings.

I chased k98 rifles for years, full of history. But I got into the K31, almost by accident recently, and cannot look back. Wish I would have gotten into these 10 years ago.
