Hello everyone, been looking at getting a long distance rifle. Just for the range. Looked at Remingtons 700's and Savage and Ruger. Pricing starts around $1000.00 plus-plus. I get it precision cost=lots of money. Then I thought ,I could start with something , a little less accurate....so old army surplus rifles come to mind. So I looked at alot of different types.
I ran across the Swiss k31. Most forums (swiss gun forum) I've looked at say that a 1" group at 100 yards is pretty normal. If i bought one of these rifles, other then just practicing is there any competition events that I could compete in . I'm in Ontario.
thanks for looking.

How long do you want to go? You don't need to spend $1000 to get a very nice shooting rifle. I'm a Savage guy personally (but there are many good options), and have had a lot of luck with their rifles in factory form. I haven't had one that didn't shoot better than MOA. Reloading helps a lot too. You`d probably be surprised what a $300 Stevens 200 will do. That being said, there are plenty of factory heavier barreled varmint/precision for well under $1000 on EE as well.

Plus down the road there is plenty of room to upgrade as you progress. It would likely be easier to get the results you are after by starting with a common platform. Unless of course you just really want a K31, then go for it!

Check the Milsurp forum, lots of options in ON.

no better way to learn to shoot distance than using irons. The K31 has fairly standard v-notch sights that kinda suck for distance shooting but there are a number of diopter options. 7.55x55 is also cheap enough to reload; brass can be had from Traddex (banner sponsor above).

A nice Lee Enfield No 4 fitted with a Mk 1 sight is another great place to start (See DCRA, Bisley etc) although it will cost more to get set up properly.

Either way, have fun!

Tradeex has Schultz & Larsen M69 and Swede CG63 target rifles for five hundred bucks, with diopter sights.

The K31 is a nice rifle. It's probably my most accurate Milsurp.
They make a non-drill and tap mount for it too. This allows an easy addition of modern optics (the scope is offset and not ideal - but it's tolerable).

That being said - GP11 is expensive and not always around - so either reload or buy as much as you afford / intend to shoot.
I've decided to get out of the K31 game in exchange for a modern platform - you'll see many vendors selling K31's these days and they aren't rare on the EE.

As others have mentioned - if it's strictly the price that attracts you - there may be better options.

Cheers!

I have been looking at those too. I really love the swede. I also think the story from german rifle to danish target rifle is pretty cool.

Oh wait, I haven't got one yet... don't look at these you probably won't like them! LOL

I would like to get a K31 too. I had a chance to try one but I am spoiled by modern conveniences at the moment.

I had read that the GP11 was pretty good. I do like the ability to run 30 cal proj's but I have read it is a bit more finicky to load for because of brass/straight pull. One to find brass that is boxer and also because with the straight you don't have the (probably wrong term) torque of a traditional bolt and have to watch the brass sizing.

Thanks for all the great responds!!I was looking at the k31 for a couple of reason, swiss made, very accurated to start with(right out of the box). And I like the idea of a straight pull bolt, and the 30 cal. There is a new scope mount for it know, that mounts the scope on top of the reciever. The side mount scope was one of the draw backs I didn't like. I'm still on the fence, but I think its hard to buy this much quality and refinement in todays rifle, with out sending it to a gunsmith and having a bunch of of work done.
I thought about a #4 Lee Enfield, but doesn't the swiss 7.5x55 have more potential? I think Tradeex sell 7.5x55 brass in boxer primer form.
Thanks for all the great ideas and will be letting you know which way I go, new or old.

The Ontario Rifle Association has a Swiss contingent. They compete at 300 yds with iron target sights on ranges at Camp Borden with K31's.. Everything you need in Swiss shooting including nice barbequed Bratwurst lunches. Google ORA.
