A K31 is not a Schmidt Rubin.
There are differences in the barrel and chamber of a Schmidt Rubin vs a K31.
Schmidt Rubin dies will make good ammo for a K31, but not the other way around. Not an issue, unless you own both types of rifles.

Exactly right.
"Schmidt Rubin" chambers would be the models 1889, 89/96, M93 Calvary(Manlicher), and Kadet 97,in 7.5x53.5 GP90 which uses same dies.
....and the 96/11, 1911, and K11 in 7.5x55 GP11.

I just found that out a little while ago.I have a set of Redding 7.5X55 dies that are just great for a really nice K31 I bought a short while ago but won't work for my much older 1889 rifle.

I have had a K31 for a number of years. The metal is in great shape but the stock is/was very rough. I always thought this was boot damage on the butt from drill but I finally read, crampons and perhaps nails on the sides of the souls.
I decided to refinish the stock, stripped it, steamed it for a couple of hours, stained it to match the original stain as in the barrel channel and first coat of oil is on it now. The oil I use is a German product, cures hard over night and is fantastic stuff. I don't want a rifle that looks like it was made today but one in incredible shape that was made way back and I want a finish that will cure in my lifetime!
Some of the bands are a bit bright, I may try a rust blue on them.

sdwatt, I noticed your comment, "The rifle, unaltered in any way and using the irons, shoots minute of angle or better at 100 metres freehand. Well in line with my shooting ability.". What do you mean by "freehand"? Do you mean offhand?
I must admit that other than the Brits and the Americans back then, no one in the world seemed to figure out that notch rear sights really suck compared to an aperture sight like on the #4. I have a some international competition experience and irons can be amazingly accurate, just not open notches. They are acceptable for eighteen year old eyes for plinking however. I have an assortment of shooting glasses frames and iris's etc and I am going to try next summer to see if I can actually make anything out of these notch sights with my older eyes.

I have had some excellent results with the stock K31 sights and PRVI ammo at 200 yards. My best five shot group so far was about 2.5" at that range, I'm more than pleased when I can do that with a scoped hunting rifle. I don't know exactly what it is, maybe it's a little finer sight than a lot of the other milsurp rifles, coupled with a good trigger and an inherently accurate rifle? Whatever it is I seem to be able to shoot circles around my other open sighted rifles with it.
I stand corrected, my casual reference to "free hand shooting" refers to the more correct term of, "off hand shooting".
Sadly, beyond 100 metres I just don't have the off hand shooting skills I wish I had.
Also, once I track down a proper 300 m target for swiss shooting matches I will provide a better assessment of the irons while prone.

Wow, you guys can shoot 1" standing at 100m. That is fantastic! I hope you will be on the next Olympic team because we will clean up! All Gold!
At 10m that would be about .1". That should give you a perfect score on the 10m air rifle target. The 10 is about a .5mm dot but the size of the pellet will cover it! Air rifle is the toughest shooting game there is.
By the way, every shot you fire counts, not just the ones inside 1", just kidding of course, not trying to pick on anyone, cheers.

I was being a cheeky bugger. �� I'm not nearly that good! I have never seen anyone shoot moa off hand with a scope let alone irons!
And I don't own a sks either!
