Okay diesel, I should have known after the SKS comment but MY SKS can shoot under one minute one shot groups all day long!

My refinish job is almost done but the grain on this piece is quite open. My oil will normally fill the grain in four coats with the second coat sanded in but this Swiss wood in not cooperating. Looks almost like Ottawa Valley Butternut but harder, I guess it's some flavour of walnut. There is a factory patch on the edge of the butt that looks more like the walnut I am used to. It was no doubt patched when new to save the blank as no other work has been done to it. If anyone knows about Swiss walnut let us know.
 
Sights

Forgot to mention that as far as I know target sights have always been available for the K31. Diopter is connected to a fine one from Swiss Products. I had the chance to review one but just could not find the time.
 
Back in Switzerland, the company of Wysse have been making precision diopter sights for the K31 for many years. Meanwhile, Swiss Products in Kallispel Montana, have been making a revised version that will take you up to 1000m for less than half the price of the Wysse version. Diopter and I are commited target shooters of K31s, and can recommend this up-to-date piece of precision engineering, fully authorised by the Swiss Shooting Federation in Switzerland, the only such sights so authorised.

Details - Type P/S Diopter:
Presenting the Flagship of the Swiss Products line... The new Type P/S (steel) Diopter. This Diopter is calibrated to range from 75 yards to 1,000 yards, is made of steel and is Eye Relief Adjustable. No rail changes are necssary. The Type P/S will accept both Anschutz and Gehmann Irises.

I have the infinitely-variable foresight element made by Gehmann - a real boon on a bright day - that's around 140eu extra. The rear sight unit is readily removeable by turning a single fastening clamp screw, and will always go back to the same location - the K31 receiver is made as precisely as any watch. In fact, I can shoot with the diopter in the morning, and a similarly easy to fit scope in the afternoon - also from Swiss Products. Note that although the foresight unit remains in place, it is way out of focus when using a scope of reasonable power, and can be 'blanked out' of your sight image with a little practice.

Beware! There ARE knock-offs made in Hongpan out there, usually from the internet auction sites....I bleeve that Tradex deal in the Swiss Products, uh, products, as do Brownells in the USA.

I was snurfing around looking for Swiss walnut and found a KO sight made in China on Ebay. At $235 plus I don't think it's a deal let alone any quality issues. I think it's kind of amazing that someone in China would be interested in making this sort of thing. I can't imagine it's a hot bed of K31 activity in China but you never know.

Without wishing to influence you in any way, I'd just like to note that the item you mentioned is a heap of total sh*te, not worth the value of the glue on the back of the stamps. SP products are backed in full by the makers, whom we have known for years, and by reputation, which is peerless, and by the sheer quality of their product, which, I would remind you, is the ONLY such sight that it NOT made in Switzerland that is as good as the Wysse sight set. An example of their attitude to the customer came about when a he complained about the way in which HIS diopter sight now only failed to match the contour of the receiver at the point of contact, but that the clicks were not repeatable, or even measured the same between movements. It turned out that the sight was NOT an SP product, but had been made in Hongpan - like the one that you mentioned. In spite of that, on receiving the complaint, SP replaced his crappy Chinese junk with the real deal at no cost.
If you are serious about shooting your K31 as well as it can shoot - with diopter or scope - then it is to Montana that you should be looking, not China.

just inherited a k31- apparently been in the family for 40+ years nobody knows from where it came- nice enough shape want to re-do it.
But no magazine!!!! would be a crappy single shooter.
can someone direct me to a clip.
would like to purchase ammo but- not willing to buy a case if it will be single shot.
any help would be swell.
 
every place i have contacted has been sold out or does not carry
do you remebere the place that had them?

You need a magazine, not a clip. In Europe we have Guisan, who is now based in CH. His prices are not cheap, but they ARE real K31 magazines, not frawks. Email me or Diopter for details, or, if you are in no hurry, I can bring one over with me in the late Spring when we are back with my folks in ON.

Okay, here it is. The front band is rust blued and the finish is linseed oil with dryers so it actually dries. The last one is just for fun, not a K31. The pic of the barrel channel show the original colour under the barrel, this area was not stripped or stained compared to the edges that were.

That mount is the one on my rifle, does the job. I look at my rifle and I really don't recognize it, it was really rough, wish I took some before pics. After I stripped it I spent about two hours with a steamer raising dents.

Most of us who put a scope on K31 have one of thse, and beware, there ARE crappy fakes on e***. It does not clip, but is machined to exactly locate in the cut-out on the RHS of the action, and is held immovably by a large bolt and securing clamp. All very clever. It cannot move, nor can it go anywhere else except in the exact same place, so taking it off and putting it back keeps your zero.

I've had one for years, but since I live in UK, mine came from Guisan in The Netherlands. You can see the cost in the Brownell's catalogue. Note that there is also a steel version but it is a low-number seller, mainly because it is not as tough as the alloy version - anodised to alsost twice the surface hardness of the all-steel version - but is also twice the weight.

Note that it uses 11mm/ 3/8th inch mounts like a .22 rimfire or airgun, but it's a never-mind. The SP mount has a built-in recoil stop.
