The forum below is a great resource for information on G/K-43's if you haven't seen it yet. At the top of the page are some good links for suppliers of parts for them as well.
The web admin of this forum is Darrin Weaver, who wrote a book called 'Hitler's Garands'. It is the definitive history of G/K-43's. It is available online from the author, Ebay and at Milarm, I've seen it there also.
My understanding is that the G-41 and then the G-43's were hurriedly developed in response to the Soviet SVT40 and how effective it was on the Eastern Front. Some German soldiers would pick up captured SVT's and use them. Both Mauser and Walther made prototypes (with the gas system based on the SVT) but the Walther model was chosen. There is obviously a lot more information but the above resoures should have every thing you need.
Yeah, I saw that you registered on that forum after I posted here. That is the end stop for information on the net for anything to do with G/K 43's. You probably have seen these other sites already but:
I bought a East German reworked G43 AC44 off another CGN member. It came with a repro mount and a Russian Pu scope (selling pending funds for a ZF4) and is in real good shape. I am just in the middle of adding a Shooter's Kit (the adjustable gas piston by Apfeltor) to it to help limit damage to the bolt assembly and so I can shoot it regularily. What did you end up getting?
