Yesterday I had the good fortune of acquiring a matching, vet. bring back. K98. byf, 43
The rife is in good condition with only a bit of surface rust on the butt plate,
The rife has been disassembled and I was going to give it a good wipe down with some oil.

What if anything else would be recommended to help preserve it. I will take some pictures and post later.

Be sure to get a letter from the fellow who brought it back. You want it to state who he is, what formation he was with, the date he got the rifle, the number of the rifle and where he got it.

This way it is DOCUMENTED and becomes an actual Historical Artifact rather than just another old Mauser: MUCH more significant than just buying one off a rack.

Congratulations on such a FINE acquisition!

Lots of Pictures

Here as some pictures. I have removed the front sight hood and have not replace it. The rifle is missing the cleaning rod. but everything else seems to be there and matching. The second last picture shows what looks like crusty rust, but it was grease and dirt which cleaned up with a wipe of oil.The only rust on the rifle was on the butt plate which cleaned up with a bit of oil and a brass brush.

Good looking Oberndorf .... :)

Nice original slng as well .....

She's a rare find in Canada and valuable, so take care of her .. ;)

I have Obie's running from 1934 through to 1945 and it's amazing to see the change in manufacturing techniques and QC during that period, due to declining standards and wartime attrition of capabilities.

Good mid-war example of this manufacturer ....

Doug
