I picked up this rifle about 20 years ago, all matching k98, very little wear. Just one problem....

The little problem is someone decided that shaving a bit off the stock would make a more comfortable chin rest :(

I have toyed with the idea of a replacement stock, but this one is serial numbered to the rifle.

Seeking opinions on value, as is, or with unaltered correct (but not serial numbered) stock????

Also, has a small cartouche under the grip, can anyone identify?

Thanks for your opinion

Thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated, this site is great.

No electropencil numbers, I was hoping I had lucked into an all original. At least I will be able to take to the range without worrying.:) On the bright side, a new project for me to do some research on East German refurbs!

I will leave the stock "as is", claim it was scraped down as the defecting East German border guard was sliding down the Berlin Wall with it,... yah that's it!

It's a very nice rifle you have there.

Is there just one Vopo stamp on the wood, any Vopo stamps on the metal?

Does the stamping on the bolt, safety match the receiver for same type of numbers, letters, font, etc.

She's lovely
If you ever decide to sell her please let me know
And yes the lads are right
About $400 (standard price range with a few dings and a exc+ bore) to $500 (for a mint piece)
Warmest regards

Richard

For a refurb I'd say 300 - 350

I disagree. A nice condition RC will fetch that. A vopo refurb if all matching and no bs, id say 600 or more. With damage etc, like seen above 450-500.

Early vopo's were in some cases not messed with a great deal, leaving them in original condition and with its matchign serial numbers intact.

Hi

Here is a K98 that I had a few years back. It is a BCD 41 Gustloffwerke. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good shot of the East German barrel & acceptance / proof marks they put on the barrel and action.

Note the top of the bolt doesn't have the ridge for the bolt guide. This was a "late" bolt design change.

i think i sold mine for $350 shipped (and i made money on the deal), nobody would touch it for more than that. i think it was unfired since refurb. took a few weeks to sell it. so i think anything over $400 is really pushing it.
