Hey guys,
I got a RC K98 not too long ago that I'm planning to restore. The shellac is coming off, and its in rather tough shape at the moment, but its got a lot of potential. One issue is the barrel, right by the front band. It looks like someone took a screwdriver to it and pocked it up real well. I was thinking of just getting a bluing pen and marking them darker so that the marks don't stick out so much. If anyone has better suggestions I'm all ears! Thanks for looking

They look like marks put there by a madman with a centre-punch.

If the edges are raised, you can flatten them carefully with a hammer and a thin steel bar or the side of a chisel.

THEN you can touch-up the blueing for appearance.

Seen that a few times around barrel bands - usually it's an idiot with a hammer who can't figure out how to depress a retaining catch or spring holding the band so instead tries to brute force a band off.

After taking another look at it, the edges aren't really raised too much. I'll probably end up lightly sanding and rebluing that spot.

That's likely what happened. In their defence, I cannot remove the band at all! I may have to get creative to remove this thing... Although I will take much better care not to nick it!
