I just received a sporterized K98 (BCD 43) with double claw mounts and would like to return it to it's original military configureation. The barrel's the original length, but the sights are long gone. So what I'm wondering is, can I have the barrel removed and replaced without harming the scope base on the front ring? Any suggestions on who could do this work in Canada?
Thanks for your ideas, Mark K

I'm sure it can be done, is the base soldered on or held on with screws? After you get the base off, it's just a case of having the proper tools and spinning the barrel off. Fitting a new one on the other hand, is a fair bit more work. Do a search, there are quite a few 'smiths named on this board who can help you out. - dan

Is the work to undo the customization really worth it? I have a preWar Mauser with double claw mounts on the front and rear bridges. The workmanship to dovetail them im, then align the screw slots AND checker around them cannot be duplicated. So, are you trying to make a generic Mauser out of a true custom job?

Mausers are one of the most common military surplus rifles. There are lots around in original condition, and lots that have some very fine gunsmithing done. And in between plenty of variety. Choose your starting point wisely.

If the bbl is the same length then why not just re-install military sights to it?
Hell i have a bunch floating around hear which ones do you need?
they were just soft soldered into place:D

It's a wartime rifle that I think was sporterized post war. I don't think theres any real value in it as a sporter. I tried to clean it up. I think the fouling made it look servicable but the barrels pitted to hell. I need a whole new one. Anyone know where to get one?
