Hi..

My uncle passed away last May (aged 83) and I was looking through his toolboxes today with my aunt and we came across 3 K98 bayonets that are complete with scabbards. Two have bakelite grips and one has wooden grips.

I compared the serial numbers against each other and found one scabbard and one bayonet that matched but had been switched around years ago.

There are spots of light surface rust on the metal scabbards but the grips for all three are in excellent condition. The blades are in nice shape.

I remember that he picked up 6 or so of these bayonets in the early 1970's.

I have a number of mostly matching K98's that had no bayonets until now.

Are there any areas I should concentrate on when I take pictures for posting here?

Thanks.

Jim.

Depends on the purpose of posting pictures. Do you want estimated value? $200-250 for matching bayo in nice condition. $80-140 for non-matching. Make and year could change the price.

I just paid $200usd for a flat new 44fnj. So unless they are mint mint they won't be worth over $200cdn. And even then, a tough sell IMHO.
Take pics of serial numbers, maker Mark. And general condition.

I began collecting k98 bayonets. In the early stages of Ebay and the internet, k98 bayonets, matching used to easily sell for $200 and up, late war phosphate or rare codes would fetch a lot, and I mean ALOT, like $350 plus at times. Beautiful examples were plentiful, and I brought near zillions back from Europe over the years. I still love these things, down to matching examples from every year from 1936-1944. I never did find the elusive 35 and 45 ones though.

I just completed my bayo. I had a late war tropical frog, and was looking for a mint late bayo to match.
Got one while at SOS.

Flat mint 44fnj and a 44 dated and rbnr marked web frog.

That's a really sweet rig Andrew, I like the added touch of the DAK frog!

Here's my 44 ffc:

As mentioned by the other gents, around $200 is what you can expect to pay for a matching rig here in Canada but depending on condition/rarity they can go for more.

Ha-ha. We could've met there. Attended both SOS and NGD.

Really? Haha. Studentofhistory, steve1987, jbmauser and I went together. Was a great time. We were with the k98k guys. Great show and great parties!

I also picked up a mint zf4 scope and mount. And a german/usgi ship home crate and also a 45 dated ammo pouch.

I went with two other guys not members here, but they are more into swords and medals, not into firearms. Too bad next year they are planning to put SOS and NGD shows one or two weeks apart. Too bad.. Well who knows maybe next time we'll hit it together.

That's one show I always wanted to hit before I died! You guys must have had a blast!
.. and you have better gun shows in AB! :) At least from what I see from comments posted on this forum.

Yes, SOS is a week earlier, NGD is a week later. I don't really care, I only went for SOS. We are planning on going again.

Would have been a good show for a medal collector.

It was a great show! I didn't know any other members attended other then the guys I travelled with. For collectors who haven't been, I would definitely suggest it!

The only problem is seeing all the great guns you can't bring back! The ones you can bring back, make sure to have an importer set up and keep in mind the low Canadian dollar, import costs, shipping, and tax when considering the price.

I didn't buy any guns personally, but also got another great K98k bayonet with original frog. For me the SoS is mostly about having and when at the show I was mostly interested in militaria instead of guns, with things being the way they are here...

Cheers,
-Steve

So getting back to K98k bayonets taking into account probably more than seventeen manufacturers, different years, variations/simplifications even withing same year and manufacturing - how many unique bayonets would constitute more or less proper collection? A hundred? Several hundreds? How do you define what you collect and what not?

P.S. Just looked at this - http://k98.free.fr/ - sweet baby Jesus!
