Just wanted to get some info on a nice K98 Bayonet for a friend. I am not a bayonet guy, let alone a Mauser guy, so apologies for the ignorance.

The bayonet is blued with E u F Horster on one side, 920 on the other with a little fancy 's' (I think) on the other. The scabbard is matched to the bayonet. There is a '37' on the top flat by the hilt.

Under the wood grips on the shank is stamped 5549 and the grips are both stamped 65 on the underside.

Can anyone shed any light on the numbering scheme? Is the 920 number the serial? Did they restart from zero each year on the bayos?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Yes, the 920 is the serial number of the bayonet and scabbard. The 37 on the side of the flat would denote manufacture in 1937. I am not sure if they restarted the serial at zero for every year but that would make sense as you don't see bayonets with high numbers.

Not sure on the wood markings, could be a sub-contractor marking of some sort.

Most companies started at 0 for new production year. They started at 1 to 10000 + then would add a letter below for next 10000 eg:1234

So the 920 serial# would be the 190920 bayonet produced in 1937 by Horster.
