I have 2 Mausers that I shoot regularly
One is Yougo M48 the other is K98 with flat buttplate
So when I shoot K98 I get a smack on the cheek when shot goes off.
When I shoot m48 I don't have this problem.

So my question is how or where the cheek of the right handed shooter should be when shooting k98?

Thanks for info.

It's a hard question. I shoot rifles I feel comfortable with that others don't, we're all built differently. It may just be a matter of you getting used to and adjusting to her.

My brother has a shotgun that he loves to shoot. Every time I shoot it the safety on the top of the receiver smacks the area between my thumb and trigger finger! I'm a sheet metal worker and have what some have described as "mean grip" but none the less I can't shoot that gun as I've ripped my glove once and cut my hand another time! Every time I pull the trigger it slips back and boom!!! Hand pain city!!

Everyone is different so it's a hard question to answer (as some of the other gents have pointed out) but typically I like to align my face so that my cheek bone is pressed right above the left side of the butt while gripping very firmly. I suppose it depends on the skeletal makeup of your face though...

Do you play hockey? The way I think about it can be put in terms of getting checked into the boards. If you're 2 feet away from the boards and the other player slams into you, you're gunna crash into them and it most likely won't feel all the good. But if you hug the boards while getting hit they'll absorb most of the shock instead you getting tossed into them. Absorbing the recoil on a big bore rifle isn't all that different in my opinion, just use the fleshy part of your face as shoulder pads LOL!

Well thanks everyone for help, I'll have to figure out something regarding my hold and cheek alignment.
I thought that there was some kind of set position for proper sight picture/cheek weld with this part of the stock that is common knowledge.
I'll try keeping my cheek further down the stock i guess.
I compared both rifles and the shape of both stocks are different from each other.
Any idea why they went to cupped buttplate from flat shaped one?

Hey g76,

That's an easy one.
First of all, yougo is actually spelled Yugo.(Cause it's not the car from the 80's)
Second of all the German (K98k) ##### (Commonly referred to as Elisa, or Gretchen)is pissed that you actually have two rifles with the same caliber and are similar in appearance and that you prefer the YUGO over her!
Third thing is, how would you wife or girlfriend react to the same situation?(Two of them)
The french would call this a menage a trios. ( Unfortunately the french rifles were usually found on the ground....unfired)

IMHO, Don't worry, no need to thank me, just trying to point out the obvious :)

I have the same problem. I had a 1940 ERMA RC years ago with a flat butt plate and the stock whacked my cheek every shot. My son now has a Czech post war K98 with the cupped butt plate and I can shoot it comfortably. I've never had the chance to compare side by side but I assume stock dimensions must be different in some way.

Well I have to admit, I'm fallen for an older "woman" K98 so its the YUGO M48 should be jealous and not K98. Women/rifles go figure?????????
Anyways I have SVT40 love affair now, 2 this month alone.
