Perhaps your collar was already weakened from a previous attempt at removing it? If you spread it too wide to slip it off the bolt, it can weaken or break. I have a spare M98 collar if you can't source one locally.
 
Thanks Kurgan I would actually really appreciate it as I can't source one locally I'd have to order from T.E.C. in Ontario and they have a $25 minimum order. I'll PM you my details.

Good on you Kurgan. Very nice gesture indeed. Mark0, lucky you. Do you know how to put the collar on without breaking it??? I am not being rude. Many people try to open them up and take them directly out of the slot. They just need to be opened up enough to fit over the bolt body until you reach the bolt handle. Then opened just enough to clear the handle and slip over the end. Reverse this for installation.

Thanks for the tip bearhunter. If I'm hearing your correctly you disassemble the bolt and slide it onto the bolt body from the same side as the handle. Opening it up just enough to clear the handle and lug?

That's how I do it. You're a quick study. Even then you need to be careful.
 
Thanks Kurgan, I received the extractor collar you sent me. It went on easily the way you guys described without any issues. I really appreciate you sending me that part it was a very generous gesture.
