Here are some pics of my K98. A great uncle of mine brought it back from Europe after the war, his wife was kind enough to give it to me after he died. I know a little about it from another forum I posted it on a year or two ago but I am always interested in learning more. If you see anything interesting or strange please leave a comment. I know it was built in 1935 and received a new barrel in 1938. It looks pretty rough but I like it that way with lots of character. Sorry about the crappy photography skills.

Has marks on top of chamber that I do not recognize. Hopefully JB will come along and shed some light on the numbers. :)

Looks like numbers are matching... do not see the typical G98 or K98.

Very cool! Kind of hard to tell from these pics but it looks like a depot stamp on the wrist. I'm not familiar enough with them to recognize which one. The barrel is an armorers spare as denoted by the 0.2 stamped on it and the bolt is an Astrawerke armorers spare numbered to match. Typical depot numbering pattern with the last 2 digits on the bolt parts. Some reused and renumbered parts as well.

I would love to see better pics of the wrist markings and any other markings on the rifle. Full barrel code would be neat to see as well.

Maybe Andrew will recognize the depot.

Spandau depot?

Agreed she's seen some action.

I can't make out the stamp either. Can you post some pics of the wood markings with bright light? And at different angles?

Amazing!! An original K98(apart from German rework) in Canada that hasn't been cut off, drilled, had the stock butchered or had some bonehead engrave his SIN on the side rail. With a little careful cleaning it will look real nice.

lol. No kidding eh?

I'm really looking forward to more and better pics.

Yes, it probably would clean up quite a bit but I would be EXTREMELY careful about how it was done. Clean too much, or with the wrong materials and there goes any collector value and you've ruined a piece of history.

Gentle cleaning with bronze wool for the metal and I wouldn't touch the stock with anything other than a clean cloth.

OP, if you want advice on how to clean it properly send me a pm. I'd be glad to help.

I usually clean real dirty stocks with a clean rag soaked in a little turpentine. It is amazing how much dirt will rub off. I don't know if some would say I am devaluing the rifle but it sure makes the grain much more visible as well as markings in the wood. But no chemical strippers and no abrasives. For the metal bronze wool (0000) and oil, very gently.

Well I don't know if these are any better. There does not appear to be a code on the underside of the barrel, just a few stamps. the small number on the wrist looks to be either a 68, 69, 58, 55,or 65.

The barrel code info is whatever precedes those waffle ants on the barrel.

That's stamp is tough make out. Might have to do some digging. Looks like a cool gun tho

I do not suggest you do this, but if you rub a little (veery small amount) footpowder on the marks, they will be easier to read. Don't overdo it and make sure you remove after with a toothbrush or something like that.

Try also to get a magnifying glass or watchmakers loupe (spelling) to get a closer look.

Try taking pictures from different angles and use indirect light instead of flash.

I think you have something special here ...
