Hello all, a little while back I posted on a thread about how to tell if a barrel was bent, after a little more investigation, it turns out that it's my receiver that is bent. It's not much but enough to throw the barrel to the left , making my scope adjustment maxed out to the right to compensate.
Could this be corrected, or should I just replace the receiver? (It's a sportered K98, no collector value)

Well - Depending upon the type of mounts (Weaver, Leupold) you could get windage adjustable rings... Are you sure its not the base mounts that were installed off centre - this happens alot with sported milsurps.
 
I agree with cosmic - a misaligned mount installation is more likely than a bent receiver. Burris rings with the eccentric inserts would be a cheaper fix than changing the receiver.
 
If the reciever is bent that much, the bolt probably would not work... as the above posts suggest, the drilling and tapping for scope mounts was probably done wrong. Get it to an experienced gunsmith will be your best bet.

Interesting. Could this be a really poor job of threading? Seems like the threads are not straight on the barrel or the receiver threads are not straight.
Anyone know how a receiver is threaded before heat treating, is it tapped or threaded on a lathe?
 
I have never seen a barrel off line like that... obviously you should take it to an experienced smith and have him remove the barrel and determine what is wrong... you aren't going to fix this by yourself.
 
The only guess that I would make is that someone might have tried to remove the barrel without using the proper tools. Put enough torque one the rear section of the receiver and Viola!

Find a gunsmith that has a take off military barrel sitting in his shop. Are there any that don't qualify? Have him pull your barrel and install his, don't worry about headspace it's only temporary. If that one is crooked you will know the threads in the receiver aren't cut squarely. If it's straight you'll know that your barrel is threaded improperly. Then you can determine what has to be done to correct the problem.
 
It looks to me as if the rails are bent to the left the receiver ring looks straight to the barrel
Run a straight edge along the side of the receiver to the rear of it and measure then check the other side if it is straight then start peeling barrels

I see a definate difference between the two sides of the receiver, one side is bowed in and the other is bowed out. I'm wondering if the receiver could be corrected with heat applied via a torch to both sides of the rails then pryed back.(?)
 
If heat where applied it would affect the heat treating, and it would require re-hardening and tempering, I don't know of anyone capable or willing to take the risk. Even if this where done I think getting things bent back to their proper positions would be next to impossible. I would have the threads checked as previously stated - hopefully it is just the barrel threads that are out of square.
