Does anyone know where I can get a taller front sight for a K98? I picked up a Russian captured rifle the other day that groups great and I've got it bang on in terms of windage, but it shoots about 15" high.

I know Brownells has them listed, but they're out of stock.

The problem you're facing is not uncommon. Most military Mausers tend to shoot high when they're being used up close (under 200 yards). It's important to remember that these rifles were intended for combat situations and in most instances, soldiers were engaging each other at distances that exceeded the average space provided to you by most rifle ranges here in Canada so the good news is that there likely isn't anything wrong with your rifle... provided you were shooting at a distance that didn't exceed 300 yards.

Another factor which may contribute to hitting high is the type of ammunition you're using. If you've picked up a crate of yugo surplus from the 50s, chances are your ammunition is to blame. Much of the post war surplus ammo is packed quite hot and some of it is intended for use in MGs so firing it out of a K98 can present a number of issues.

With all of this in mind, perhaps Numrich or Liberty Tree will have what you're looking for. Provided they ship to Canadians?

No, I was just getting it sighted at 100yds (got it centred, and like I said, it groups nicely all things considered). I expected it to shoot a bit high, but I didn't realize how high surplus Mausers tend to shoot! Part of it could be the ammo, I was using S&B 196gr, and my understanding is that European manufacturers don't use undersized bullets, and S&B loads theirs a bit hot.

Thanks for telling me about Liberty Tree, I just ordered one of the tall sights now. Hopefully that'll get it close; I like 6 O'clock hold, and I can deal with aiming a bit lower than that, but it's kinda hard to shoot a target when I have to aim a foot low.

My 7.62 Israeli was also shooting ~12-15" high so I put on one of the tall front sight posts from Brownells. It just took a bit of range time with a flat file and now it's zeroed just nicely!
