Excellent technical and informative post. Any one researching the operation of the M98 and Mosin cocking systems would do well to read CU's post carefully from beginning to end.
On a more serious note, I'd say the M98 is more of a 90% #### on opening. Half #### is a bit of an exaggeration.
Interesting. I would not have thought the cocking piece moved back that much after contact with the sear on closing. I've never measured it for a percentage.I just did a rough measurement and it is about a 3/4 ####-on-open.

9mm on opening, 13mm when closing. 69% ####-on-open. So not even close to a true ####-on-open.

So I measured a bunch of my M98's ranging from small ring, to intermediate, to regular large ring actions and came up with an average of 75% #### on opening. These were all military actions and I didn't measure any commercial actions since this is the milsurp forum but I'd imagine they would fall in that range as well. There wasn't a big difference between any country or style of M98.9mm on opening, 13mm when closing. 69% ####-on-open. So not even close to a true ####-on-open.

Any way, just posted to confirm your findings. I wasn't sure how big of a M98 selection you have.
I just found it interesting that the mauser moved forward on closing. I have only 1 Mauser. It is a Chilean 1912-61. I guess not a true M98, but close enough.
69% #### on open, eh? Guess that makes the K98 only 31% as good as the Enfield......#### on close rules!![]()
