K98k Cupped Buttplates: Did the Germans blue them or leave them bare?

Hi,

I have been looking at some pictures of German K98ks online, hoping to know what the correct look of one with cupped buttplate should be. Some of the original K98ks (non RC) had decent bluing left on the barrel and the action, but the cupped buttplate and the disc in the stock always look bare. I wonder is the bluing on buttplates worn out sooner than the other parts? Or were they "in the white" when they left the factories?

On the other hand, I have also seen a number of people showing off their K98ks with blued cupped buttplates.

Had the German manufacturers ever blued the cupped buttplates? Or is it just "restorations projects" done wrong?

Always "in the white" for German K98k's. Sometimes you will see K98k's advertised as German with bolts in the white as on South American and Yugo rifles, didn't happen.

I don't have such a buttplate at hand. Could somebody please take a measurement of the inside length, width and depth for me? I'm thinking of modifying one (if possible) to use as a replacement for the one missing on my VZ-52/57.
Thanks!
PP.

Good info. If you do have a blued buttplate, it is cold blued. Soak in Vinegar for 5-10 minutes, rinse and oil and your buttplate will be "in the white" again and good as new.

But don't let the vinegar get anywhere near the blueing on your rifles or you just wrecked it. Watch for pitting as it is 5% acetic acid!

Generally though, any rework with a reblued butt plate is also renumbered as well, so removing the blue will not hide anything or fool anyone into believing it's not a rework.

I was kind of wondering this as well because I am missing a buttplate for my VZ52/57...

The shape of the Mauser buttplate is a little off though.

Its an RC, I am not trying to fool anyone :p

RC butt plates are not renumbered. With the vinegar and rinse (warm water) and oil, I don't know anyone that could tell a refurb butt plate to an original, as the cold blue will is chemically removed and not mechanically removed, so no one could ever tell the difference.

The acid is what removes the cold blue, so will sweat from your hands after extended use. With a 5-10 minute bath, warm water rinse and oiling, no damage will be done.

I took somes mesurements for you:)
cupped K98 buttplate
-lenght 4.460inch
-width narrow=1.200 inch
wide= 1.660 inch
-depth shallow part=0.530 inch
deep part= 0.665 inch

Inside mesurements ofc. If you only need the outer buttplate, the K98 wont fit, its too narrow. If you are missing both(inside and outside), the K98 plate could be fitted i think but stock may need sanding on sides and to be file on top because the angled shape of the top of the K98 buttplate.
That's all i can say for now.:)

Thought I could cut and weld something out of that part to fit over the inner one but I think I can fashion one from scratch by forming, hammering and welding.
These pans are quite hard to find nowadays.
Thanks a lot! :)

Looking at my vz 52/57 buttplate, not so hard to make, time consuming, but not hard. And you have the inner part as a guide for the contour. Some sheet metal and a MIG welder, sure you can fabricate something nice. Just PM if you need mesurement.:)

P.S Sorry for hijacking the thread:redface:

Is it a $2500 RC? LOL:p

Must chrome plate the franken stock reinforcement lug for maximum pimp effect!

Well I already chrome plated the front and rear sights aswell as the trigger. I may as well go all the way :p Maybe add some spinners to the stock disc so after every round the disc will spin round and round
