So my new K98 has a stock with a little cutout on the Left side.
The K98 is in the August Purchases. G98 updated in WW2 and refubed somewhere after.

Id never seen cut this on another K98
Cut is left side just where the barrel and reciever meet.

But today I was looking at some snipers, especially the Zf41 have the cut out.

Is this a sniper stock or just a certain manufacturer or certain years??
So just looked at another G98 conversion, has the cut out but flat buttplate, mineis later cupped version.

The fake part isn't the issue, or the sniper.
Only want to know which rifles had that little cutout on the left side, was it a sniper thing or just a stock maker thing.

And mine is not a sniper, just preplexed by the cut out

it was a sniper thing . but is your stock matched to your rifle? the eastern block refurbed most of there guns after the war. its not uncommon to see the cutout on refurbed rifles.

Ok. Yeah mine is a refurb. From where I'm not sure it doesn't fit any of the typical refurb specs. Lol.
I know mine was never a sniper but thought the stock could be.

Thx

Yes that step in the stock is for ZF41 rifles. I had such a stock a while back, came on an RC98 I had.

You do find the cut-off on some RC rifles, they do come up from time to time. I have two ZF-41's, one Bolt MM and one RC, so my original ZF41 stock is probably on a non-sniper RC.
Darrin Weaver was selling a salvaged ZF41 stock and I have seen other, including a Norwegian salvage. These stocks if legit are less common, but unless you find the exact matching rifle, they don't add much value.
Every once in awhile you hear about K98 sniper rifles in the US being met up once again with their long lost matching scope/mount. Chance in a million....

There was a small machined insert that you could put under the sight of a Kar98 to turn it into a ZF41 rifle, regardless of the manufacturer.

I am under the impression that the Germans made these to convert any rifle to a marksman (not sniper) rifle but they were not widely used. If it were true that they were developing something like a designated marksman it may be reasonable to believe it was true.

Reproductions were offered for sale on eBay many years ago. I'm not sure if the story was just a story or if there was some substance to their historical use.

Sorry this is not entirely related to the OP's question. Just some verbal diarrhea.

That piece for the zf41 scope was also ruled out as a postwar fake/fantasy item after BBOTW came out.

I know about that adapter and in Senich's Sniper book he states it as being original. However most serious collectors do think it is post war fantasy.
There are mistakes in reference books, Law's K98 book is a good example. The best book out there is Kriegsmodel, which I think is now sold out as of yesterday.
