Kaboom-over seated bullets?

So...after reading the other post about a blowed-up AR...

Lets say yer out shooting any paticular semi...
The gun jams while chambering a live round...
The bullet gets 'squished' back into the case
Ya dont notice...clear the jam....and chamber the 'squished' bullet

What happens when it is touched off?
 
Actually, it doesn't have to jam, the feed cycle of a semi-auto can cause an uncrimped, or incorrectly crimped bullet to back into the case. The result can be a huge overpressure in the case, leading to a case head rupture (Kaboom).This can happen in rifles and pistols, the least severe symptom is a cratered primer or enlarged primer pocket. Slightly more severe is a failure to eject caused by the extractor skipping over the rim at higher than designed speed (leaves the empty in the chamber and the fresh round wedged in under it), finally we have the true Kaboom - bits of gun all over the place.It's simply a matter of pushing the same amount of gas in a more confined space
 
When I first heard about setback it was to do with rechambering the same round repeatedly (something I had done a few times).

I decided to see how many times it would take to create a bad situation. TO my surprise it wasn't that many times. I tried it on a .40S&W and was surprised to see that after chambering the same round 6 times'ish the bullet had travelled almost halfway into the case.

Usually the setback (if I remember correctly) is very minor the first 3 times, but gets worse after that (at least when I did it).

I pulled the bullet afterwards and made sure to never rechamber a round more than twice afterwards :)
 
I always put a little more crimp than necessary on reloads for the s.a. firearms. Just inspecting the round will tell me if the bullet has skipped the crimp. Hasn't happened yet. Also I make a point of always emptying the mag. through the barrel. I never load up what I'm not going to shoot.

What no loaded mags? The sks has taught me the value of stripper clips and you can almost always get mag loaders that use the stripper clips for the particular firearm you use.
 
When I was using crappy mags this weekend in my new FS2000, I had 4 rounds that jammed with the bolt 99% forward and it would not fire (slightly out of battery I would assume). After clearing the jams I noticed the bullet was pushed half way back into the case on each round. This was factory Winchester 40 round value pack ammo. I inspected a few rounds out of the box, there doesn't appear to be a crimp, and flipping the round upside down, I can push the bullet into the case pretty easy.

So, it could have been nasty if it had fired those rounds eh? Not a good thing for a plastic gun... sheesh.

Using green anti-tilt followers and name brand mags, no feed or any other problems with the same ammo.
 
With the Winchester stuff.. stay away from the 45GR.JHP ammo in your semis
The irregular tip tends to either cause FTF because it hangs up, or worse, you
get the bullet pushed back into the case, it still feeds.....+++pressure!
Reserve this stuff for the bolt actions.....

That's the stuff I was using! Winchester .223REM 45GR JHP. 40 Round Value Pack USA 2232.

Never had that problem with mine.....oh yeah, that's 'cause I'm a mere mortal and don't HAVE ONE. Seriously though, thanks for forcing the issue on these, you're giving us all more options.
