Well folks I had a little mishap at the gun club yesterday.

I was shooting my Colt Delta Elite 10mm with a 6" match chambered Barsto barrel installed. I was shooting my extremely low pressure practice 40S&W velocity loads of 5.5grs Titegroup with 180gr Montana Golds @ 950fps when all of a sudden when I was only on my 13th round of the day I was sprayed on my left cheek with tiny pieces of metal or possibly powder.

One thing about this gun is that I have used it with this barrel installed for over 13 years now and I have shot a lot of high preassure loads during my 10mm load developement years.

Recoil was standard so I didn't really think muc about the spray hitting my face for a few seconds but then I felt blood starting to stream down my left cheek.

I lowered the gun touched my face with my left hand and when I took it away my hand was covered in blood. I then looked at the gun and that is when I saw the top of the chamber missing from it.

There was also a 1" hole in the new aluminum roof 4' above where I was holding the gun. Other than the fine spray that hit my face I really didn't feel anything out of the ordinary. The mag had also been forced down partially out about 1" as well, I had even heard the bullet hit the target like normal or maybe the sound I heard was the chamber metal blowing through the aluminum roof....

It's enough to make a fellow cry I have over $3000.00 invested in this gun over the years and it was my pride and joy.....

Other than the light spray that I felt on my cheek I am totally ok and the bleeding stopped in less than a minute as well.

I have pic's but have never taken the time to learn how to post them. I'll send them to Gibb505 and get him to post them for me.

That just sucks, but at least you are OK - the gun can be replaced. Any ideas as to the cause - perhaps a slam fire with the round going off out of battery or the possibility of a double charged round?

Here are the photos!

I have spent all of the remainder of yesterday and last night thinking about what happened and why and other than barrel chamber fatigue I can't think of what could have caused the failure. I can't imagine a double charge because I am always so totally carefull when loading bullets but anything could have happened.

This is the first major mishap that I have had in over 25 years of reloading my own bullets.

I just sent the pictures off to Gunnar @ Armco to ask his professional opinion.

edited to add... Gibbs505 thanks for posting the pic's.

There is a slight bulge outwards/sideways where it says Government model on the slide.

OK then, scratch one slide as well. ####!

Oh well, you can still salvage the Bomar. Or just get a Mech-Tech from Freedom Arms.

The only injuries I have right now is my pride...

Gunnar just responded that he'll have to see the gun of course but if at all possible he should be able to straighten out the slide and install my original stock barrel that is until I can afford to get another match chambered one.

Was there a loose crimp on the bullets. A buddy had something similar, not as drastict. The bullet pushed back in the case and compressed a fast burning powder. Ka boom!

Are you left handed? I was told that modern firearms are designed to fail just the way yours did (ie: magazine blowing out the bottom, shrapnel upwards and outwards) to protect the shooter. Sadly these safety designs don't work as well for lefties (or for those that shoot from the hip, do the gangsta thing, etc.)

Seeing these pictures of what can happen to a steel gun made me double-think buying a polymer gun, but since I'm right-handed, I'm still gonna get one! ;)

After 13 years, and some admitted higher pressure load development, I doubt Irv would feel obligated to warranty this barrel, but do call and let him know about the failure.

I cracked the bottom lug off a new BarSto barrel after less than 750 rounds of factory ammo years ago. The gunsmith who installed it was Barrette, and he installed a new barrel (paid for by moi) for free. Irv looked at the barrel when I met him at The Cup that year, and didn't flinch. He just looked at it, swore quietly, and asked for my address so he could send me a new one.

There was no attempt on either part to try and pin the blame at anyone else.
