After seeing Kamlooky time and time again spread his appreciation for the Browning A5, it had me keeping my eyes open for a coveted 20g - with little expectations. Well, I was in my favourite local gun shop the other day and was looking at pistols and one of the guys there that knows what kinds of guns I like mentioned he had something I may like. Well, he pulled out an A5 20g Magnum that is almost mint, save a few safe kisses, it looks new.

Well, I immediately asked how much? Then the bomb - he said he showed it to someone else and I would be second in line. Patience doesn't play well with my need to buy a gun, but I had no choice but to wait. Got the call today, first guy backed out and I now own this 1967 beauty; my first ever Browning. It will sit next to my two other long recoil shotguns: a Breda 12g and an Ithaca 20g. I just love the sound of that barrel sliding!

Support your local gun shop - they'll treat you right over time.

Thanks Kamlooky, for helping me lighten the wallet. That new mattress can wait!

'That new mattress can wait" Lol! Talk like that can have a guy end up sleeping on the couch, if she finds out that 20guage trumps mattress. Better get a different story for that one...like "it's on back-order, honey."

No, I already showed the wife - I was too excited. She puts up with my gun buying - I don't buy many, I buy the ones that I will enjoy and shoot.

I will need to do a little reading on this A5 of course, but perhaps you guys can tell me what these rings are for - they are still covered in the original packing grease.

Oh, I learned that very early into my short gunnutting - newer does not equal better. Almost all of the guns I own were made before I was born - and I love each and every one. I thank CGN, my wallet and wife - not so much at times. lol

those are the rings for the recoil system. are they spares?
i think the browning website shows the proper stackup for the application.

I hope they are spares - they were in a small plastic bag and like I said, they are still covered in the original packing grease; though the gun has had some shots through it for sure, though the action is mostly looking new.

best to pull the handgaurd off and make sure. also make sure they are stacked right. most are not if someone had it apart...

My A-5 12 mag uses two sets of rings.
I wonder it the 20 mag does the same?

Need to do some homework on that magnum.
 
Here you go.
The 12 & 20 magnums use a double set of friction rings.
One set removed means someone has set it up for light loads and 2 3/4" shells.
Page 8 in this manual explains it.

Hit the "Support" link and find the A5 Magnum on the right column 'bout arf way down.
