Hello Milsurp Collectors,

I have recently become interested in the Karabiner Model 1888 and Gewehr 1891 short carbines. I have read a book on them, and would possibly be interested in picking one up in the near future. How much do the go for on the market as stands right now, and are they even availiable? I have a prefference to the 88/05 or 91/05 conversions, or later conversions to the S spitzer mark. The 88/14 and 91/14 I hear are impossible to find with only one example in the United States existing in North America.

I have a love of very short carbines, and if this does not pan out, can someone suggest a near equal length German/Mauser rifle? I hear some Spanish ones are very short what are thier designations and availabilities?

Many thanks in advance,
Drachenblut

Fairly rare Models in Canada. In 26 years of dealing only had one complete Kar88 and also a very badly Bubbied one in stock and never a Kar91.

Hi,
i dont know about the length of the Karabiner Model 1888 and Gewehr 1891 short carbines, but you could look for one Kar98a. (about 43.3 in.) They are not too hard to find here, quite short for a ww1 gun, and are mauser. I own one and really like it. For the spanish short rifle, you have:
model 1893 mauser: 41,3 in.
model 1895 carbine: 37 in.
model 1916 short rifle: 40,9 in. (just saw one on the EE, but i think it is sold.)

Good luck!

I too am looking for a Kar 88, Gewehr 91, or Kar 71 but what from I hear they are damn hard to find in Canada and command a high price. I saw a commercially sanitized Kar 88 in 7x57 go for $600 on Marstar so you can imagine what a Prussian marked, all matching one would go for.

The barrel length, according to my reference material, is quoted as 17.1 " with an overall length of 37.6 ".

Thank you Nabs. I was in fact for Christmas about to buy a Martini-Enfield Artillery Carbine from Epps, the one gun I have been looking for for years, and when I called, it had just been sold. What a bummer!

Look on Collectors source for collectable refurbed P08. They're what's left of the Finn stocks and were rebarreled from 7.65 to 9mm. They were done with Tikka, 5 inch barrels and are correct as collectors pieces as well.

Wonderful collection Granite. If I might ask how much the Kar88 cost you and when you purchased it, and if you are ever willing to let it go or to help a young collector like myself find one, or even a Gew 91.
