Kar98a Anonymous

Crap, have to edit my post, didn't see page 2 of the posts.

It is a Polish made K98, not a German reparation rifle. The receiver says K98, not Kar98.

These were scrubbed before they were sold to Spain during the Spanish civil war. The Sepewe company would "liquidate" rifles from the Polish Gov't once the bores started to get rough, and also because the K98 was sold off in favor to make the new Wz.29 as the standard polish arm. The reason for scrubbing was to remove any Polish Government envolvement in the civil war - it was just business.

$400 sounds right in Canada, they go for $200-$300 in the US.

Thanks for the information, I'm glad I can finally piece together the past behind this rifle. I am going to keep her though, as she feels really good to hold not to forget the action is very smooth compared to my Kar98k. I'm not sure if it was standard for these rifles but it looks as if someone at one point nipped off the bit of metal that locks the bolt back when all rounds are expended as I can cycle the action unloaded without having to depress the magazine spring.

Call it firearm love at first sight ? As soon I picked her up at the show I fell in love with her.

Now I have to start my hunt for the elusive Gewehr. 98.

Just one last question, since she is Polish made, what caliber is she likely to be chambered for ? The seller mentioned she can take the 8mm Mauser round but I figured I would take her to a gunsmith and have the bore measured just to be sure.

And also to refer to her properly, what would be the designation for the rifle ?

Its an 8mm Mauser. I believe it would a wz.98a, but I could be wrong on that.

The proper Polish designation is kbk wz. 98.

Here are the Polish Mausers:

Kb wz 98 - Similar to Gew 98 with Lange rear sight
Kbk wz 98 - Similar to Kar 98 AZ
Kbk wz 29 - Polish designed Mauser
Kb wz 98a - Similar to Gew 98 but had tangent rear sight

Kb = Karabine = Rifle in English
Kbk = Karabinek = Carbine or Short rifle in English

All Polish mausers were built in 8mm Mauser.
